Water Efficient Sanitation Systems (WESS) offer game-changing innovation for the sanitation landscape in South Africa. By leveraging CSI budgets to support the implementation and maintenance of these technologies, companies will be contributing to addressing the critical need for safe and dignified sanitation in some of our country’s most vulnerable communities. Companies will also be supporting environmental, social and governance objectives to create shared value for both companies and communities. www.sastep.org.za #WorldToiletDay #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology #NGSKnowledgeHub

SASTEP aims to fast-track the adoption of innovative and emerging sanitation technologies in SA
About us
The South African Sanitation Technology Enterprise Programme (SASTEP) is a national system of innovation platform that seeks to fast-track the adoption of innovative and emerging sanitation technologies in South Africa through fostering local manufacturing and commercialization. The core strategy of the programme is to support and empower sanitation innovators (technology partners) and sanitation entrepreneurs (commercial partners). The SASTEP approach is hinged on the formation of collaborative partnerships with sanitation innovators and entrepreneurs to ensure the translation of suitable and appropriate sanitation technologies to the marketplace. The programme was created by the Water Research Commission (WRC) in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), and the Bill and Melinda Foundation (BMGF) and with the support of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). The programme is an operational vehicle of the WRC’s transformational vision SANiTi: Sanitation Transformation Initiative.

Addressing the sanitation crisis in South Africa is a complex challenge, with varying factors coming into play when selecting innovative sanitation solutions. That’s why a one-size-fits-all approach to transforming sanitation in Southern Africa is not an ideal approach. We require a wide range of technologies and solutions to ensure each community and individual challenge is addressed. This is where a call for CSI investment in reinvented toilets is a vital focus of the WRC SASTEP. CSI budgets can be allocated to the installation and maintenance of Next Generation Sanitation technologies in vulnerable communities throughout South Africa. With a special focus on schools and educational institutions, as well as public spaces and informal settlements. Together with corporate involvement, we can improve sanitation for South Africans, one toilet at a time. www.sastep.org.za #WorldToiletDay #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology #NGSKnowledgeHub

Water Efficient Sanitation Systems (WESS) technologies are addressing the current sanitation challenges faced in schools in South African communities. They offer non-sewered sanitation in areas that do not have existing sewer reticulation systems. Since 2020, demonstration projects have been launched in schools throughout Gauteng, the North-West, KZN and Eastern Cape provinces. These demonstration projects aim to showcase the capabilities of these systems within school landscapes and the data from these will be used to strengthen the argument for the use of these innovative sanitation technologies throughout the country. Today is World Toilet Day - WRC’s SASTEP is hosting an event with the aim to demonstrate how CSI budgets can be used to support the implementation of Water Efficient Sanitation Systems that address the basic human right to sanitation and align with environmental, social and governance objectives. Reinvented toilets are part of the WESS and offer sustainability, health and hygiene as well as scalability. For companies wishing to optimise their CSI spend, Next Generation Sanitation technologies offer a unique opportunity to address multiple critical human and environmental issues in South Africa. www.sastep.org.za #WorldToiletDay #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology #NGSKnowledgeHub

Toilets are a place for peace. This is the theme for World Toilet Day 2024 - focussing on the fact that toilets are an essential space, at the centre of our lives. A place that should be secure, safe and private. This is sadly not the case for billions of people across the globe, where sanitation is under threat from conflict, climate change, disasters, neglect or lack of infrastructure. Safe toilets for all by 20230 is one of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6 - but faster action is required to improve access to sanitation and toilets across the globe. SASTEP is leading the rollout of sanitation transformation in South African schools. www.sastep.org.za #WorldToiletDay #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology

As we prepare to celebrate World Toilet Day on 19 November, it’s imperative to understand why this day is so important to Southern Africa, and the world as a whole. World Toilet Day aims to raise awareness about the global sanitation crisis - a crisis where approximately 60% of the world’s population do not have a toilet at home or access to safe and adequate sanitation facilities. A large portion of this percentage still utilises open defecation which leads to high child mortality, environmental pollution and disease. Sanitation is a basic human right, and shining the light on this crisis assists to bolster action in increasing the access to safe sanitation for all. www.sastep.org.za #WorldToiletDay #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology #NGSKnowledgeHub

A successful collaborative effort between the Water Research Commission (WRC) and the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Dlungwana in the Eastern Cape, led to the successful implementation of state-of-the-art sanitation facilities. Sanitation facilities that will improve health and hygiene for both educators and students, creating a more conducive learning environment for all. The Aquonic Treatment system sanitation system is leading the way for sanitation in regions restricted with lack of water infrastructure or climate change. This successful installation of Water Efficient Sanitation Systems in Dlungwana sets the milestone for schools throughout the Eastern Cape region. www.sastep.org.za #WorldToiletDay #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology #NGSKnowledgeHub

Looking back at 2024, the SASTEP has achieved many successes. The first of which was being awarded a Bronze Award for Project Innovation at the International Water Association (IWA) World Water Congress in Toronto in August 2024. WRC’s SASTEP has brought global recognition to South Africa with this award acknowledges SASTEP’s groundbreaking approach to alternative and innovative sanitation technologies. Technologies that aim to positively impact the lives of many people and communities within Southern Africa. Our programme focuses on implementing sustainable and affordable sanitation solutions tailored to our local communities. https://bit.ly/3VfnbYH #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology #NGSKnowledgeHub

Durban having reached 100 toilets with Loowatt’s innovative sanitation technology is a milestone of success. This game changing sanitation solution showcased that South African communities value high-quality toilets and are willing to support them with user-paid sanitation options. These 100 toilets equal 350+ people having access to clean and safe sanitation; 60% of which are women and girls. 8 green jobs were created and 1700+ safely managed waste collections. A massive win for innovative sanitation in South Africa as we prepare to celebrate World Toilet Day. https://bit.ly/3VfnbYH #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology #NGSKnowledgeHub
