Exciting Milestone at the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW We're excited to share the success of our vernissage at the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW, which will be open for visitors until 30th November! The event highlights groundbreaking projects from the Incubator for Design Cultures, including Michaela Maintz's project, developed in collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Engineering | University of Basel and Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz FHNW (Institute for Medical Engineering and Medical Informatics). A standout innovation, mentored by Tino Stanković and Sven Herrmann and supervised by Florian M. Thieringer, Daniel Seiler and Michael de Wild, focuses on custom mandibular fracture implants. Through advanced algorithms, topology optimization, and 3D printing, these implants are tailored to each patient’s anatomy and fracture pattern. Virtual testing ensures they withstand real-life forces like chewing, while their lightweight, efficient design improves durability and biocompatibility. On-site production further enhances efficiency and patient outcomes. Don’t miss the chance to experience this exciting intersection of design and healthcare innovation—visit the exhibition before it closes! #3DPrinting #PointOfCare #HealthcareInnovation #Medical3DPrinting #SwissMAM #3DPrintLab #TeamUSB #DBE #UniBasel #FHNW #IncubatorForDesignCultures #BiomedicalInnovation #MandibularFractures #HealthcareDesign #Vernissage

3D printing straddles the line between art and science, attracting both engineers and artists. It’s a medium where creative design meets precise engineering. In clinical engineering, we apply a similar blend of aesthetics and analysis to human anatomy. Morphometry describes a quantification of the form, helping us computationally discern typical from atypical, identify morphologically-based anatomical landmarks, and inform tailored treatments and surgical planning. #morphometry #form #art #computation #bones

Join us at the 3DMM2O Conference 2025!🚀 We are pleased to introduce Prof. Dr. Harald Gießen from the University of Stuttgart as one of the speakers at the 3DMM2O Conference, which will take place at the beautiful Schöntal Monastery on March 23-27, 2025✨ Prof. Gießen will present his fascinating work on femtosecond 3D printing to create complex 3D microoptics, including advanced lenses such as doublets and multiplets. His research demonstrates how these optics can be made achromatic by combining different materials with specific refractive properties to achieve high quality images with minimal distortion. These systems can be printed directly onto optical fibers for applications such as ultrasmall endoscopes, OCT imaging of blood vessels, and even for improving quantum technologies. Don't miss the opportunity to engage with leading experts assembled by our scientific hosts Jasmin Aghassi-Hagmann, Christian Koos, and Wolfram Pernice and explore the latest advances in additive nano- and micro-manufacturing for optics, electronics, and bioengineering. Discovering Innovations at Formnext - Where ideas take shape Next week at Formnext, Altair will be sharing some exciting developments in implicit modeling and its powerful role in advancing industrial applications. We’re especially honored to highlight impactful work from the Renato Archer Center for Information Technology (CTI), where the LAPRINT Bioengineering and 3D Printing Laboratory is applying these technologies to create custom prosthetics, medical devices, and healthcare solutions that truly enhance patients’ lives. One heartwarming example are Prosthetics for toucans designed for comfort and functionality, with a durable lattice framework to ensure each design supports real-world needs. While industrial relevance and efficiency are essential, examples like these are a reminder of technology’s potential to improve lives, especially for those who need it most. Looking forward to connecting in Frankfurt next week to explore these advancements together. Visit the Altair booth in Hall 11.1, Booth B62, at Formnext 2024 You can schedule a meeting with Altair using the link below. https://lnkd.in/eF_KWeGZ #Formnext2024 #Altair #onlyforward #Innovation #Healthcare #3DPrinting #ImplicitModeling #TechnologyForGood

Dr. Nasim Sabahi and A/Prof Xiaopeng Li, in collaboration with Prof. Juergen Brugger's team at EPFL’s Microsystems Laboratory, have been studying how additive manufacturing techniques can enhance the use of smart materials in applications such as nerve, cardiac, and muscle tissue engineering. Their latest paper investigates 4D printing techniques—specifically Melt Electrowriting (MEW) and Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)—to fabricate smart structures at both micro and macro scales. Their findings suggest that combining these methods could enable the design of multi-scale hierarchical structures with tunable shape memory properties, tailored to specific application needs. The study also highlights the practical potential of tubular printing using MEW to create shape-memory cardiovascular stents, nerve guidance conduits, and tubular scaffolds. This opens up exciting new possibilities for designing advanced medical equipment and improving tissue engineering Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/dr_qNHsM
