More Luxury Women CEOs There has never been more luxury brands lead by women ceos. Currently there are 34 in total that lead luxury's most valuable companies. The brands they lead generated over £60 billion in annual revenue in 2023. Which is outstanding when you consider this is more than some countries make in income from selling goods and services in a year. The luxury industry comparative to other industries like banking, manufacturing, FMCG has a higher percentage of women ceos. If you're a woman ceo in 2024 you're more than likely leading a luxury brand. Chanel, Schiaparelli, and Lanvin - what do these iconic brands have in common? They were all founded by pioneering women. But today, only Chanel is still creatively led by a woman - Virginie Viard. Over 85% of graduates from top fashion schools are women. One in six people working in global fashion is female.  Yet, of the top 50 major fashion brands, only 14% are helmed by women. Dig a little deeper, and you'll find that while women are present on fashion company executive boards, they're often in non-executive roles. Only 19% are CEOs, CFOs, or chair(wo)men. The reasons are complex and deeply rooted. Historically, male-dominated finance sectors, patriarchal business structures, and the challenges of balancing a career with motherhood all play a part. But change is on the horizon. For example, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton has ambitious goals: 50% women in key positions and pay equity by 2025. Still, I believe true equality goes further than boardroom representation. It's about nurturing talent at every level. We need robust development and mentoring programs throughout women's careers, creating a pipeline of future female leaders from junior to senior roles at major fashion houses. And Let's not forget the trailblazers who've been paving the way: Donatella Versace, Margherita Missoni, Silvia Venturini Fendi, Chemena Kamali, and countless others.  They've shown what's possible, and we should support them. Empowering Women in Fashion - A Collective Responsibility On September 25, during Milan Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2023 shows, industry leaders gathered at the Bulgari Hotel to discuss empowering the female-identifying workforce. Co-hosted by BoF’s Lauren Sherman and Bulgari's Laura Burdese, the roundtable explored external activations, leadership strategies, and supply chain welfare. Despite progress, gender disparities persist. For example, female CEOs head only 2.5% of companies on the Milan stock exchange. Yet, McKinsey & Co. reports that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams are 21% more likely to outperform on profitability. Key Takeaways from the BOF article: Authentic Activism: Companies must back public statements on social justice with genuine business practices to ensure brand alignment and retain talent. Leadership and Promotion: Addressing the promotion gap is vital. For every 100 men promoted to manager, only 86 women are promoted. Supply Chain Welfare: With 80% of fashion's global supply chain workforce being female, it's imperative to improve working conditions and support communities near factories.
