MAN5060: Competencies - The PwC Experience After today's lesson on competencies by Linlan Huang , I attended a PwC event. Two of their employees kindly spoke to attendees about the various opportunities that were open to current students and those who were due to graduate in the near future. Focusing on the job description and the specific competencies were the main takeaways. Know what you're applying for and research the role and the company extremely well (!) Coincidentally,for my MAN5060 assignment,I have to choose specific competencies and provide evidence of achieving them. Nice link between something I'm studying and the summer internship I'm going to apply for 😃 Another thing made me think (from uni all the way back home on the bus). That was self-belief. A year ago, I spoke with people from PwC who came to BCU at a career event. I knew they were one of the biggest companies in the UK,but at the time I didn't believe I had any chance. What has changed? I became the top-performing student in 1st yr of the HRM course. That in itself resulted in a change in how I think about myself and my career opportunities. I'm daring to dream BIG! There's fierce competition, which the speakers reminded us of. Ok. I'm not afraid of failure. I would regret not applying simply because thousands of other students are also hungry for a summer internship. I believe I have as good a chance as anyone else ☺️ Wiktoria Garczarczyk Hansa B. During the summer break, I explored potential career paths for my future endeavours. As a part of this pursuit, I sought and obtained acceptance into the Bright Network transformative four-day virtual program - IEUK 2024: Finance, Professional Services & Consulting. The program aims to provide an immersive experience by incorporating the following components: Participation in dedicated panel discussions to gain valuable insights into the professional landscape by engaging with authoritative representatives from esteemed organisations. This will enable me to cultivate a profound understanding of the industry and acquire essential tips for navigating the early stages of my career. Involvement in interactive workshops designed to facilitate audience engagement. The program will feature workshops conducted by prominent entities such as Deloitte, PwC, and ICAEW, where I will actively participate in exercises and receive constructive feedback on my performance. An opportunity to interact with Bright Network Alumni, allowing me to glean firsthand experiences from recent graduates about their career trajectories. This will equip me with valuable comprehension of their initial job pursuits, including expectations, effective job search strategies, and best practices for professional presentation. Participation in this four-day virtual program represents a pivotal step in my professional journey. Furthermore, I aspire to leverage this experience to explore additional internships and career prospects in the foreseeable future.

🌟 Recalling a First Day at the Bright Network Internship Program 🌟 I'm excited to share my thoughts on the initial day of the Bright Network Internship program! This immersive four day experience aims to offer insights into finance, professional services and consulting and I'm looking forward to what lies ahead. Deloitte; Embracing Consulting Excellence Our day kicked off with a session by Deloitte delving into the intricacies of the consulting sector. The speakers shared tips and real life scenarios emphasizing the key competencies and mindsets crucial for success in this fast paced industry. We delved into problem solving, client relations and the significance of adaptability in todays ever evolving business landscape. This session not enhanced my knowledge of consulting but also motivated me to approach professional challenges with a critical mindset. PwC; Developing Your Personal Brand Following that we engaged in a workshop, on personal branding facilitated by PwC. The workshop underscored the importance of recognizing and communicating our blend of skills, experiences and values. Through self assessment activities we pinpointed our core strengths and values while learning how to align our brand with our career aspirations. The seminar offered insights on maintaining consistency and authenticity across different platforms ranging from LinkedIn profiles to professional interactions. I look forward to implementing these perspectives on personal branding as I progress in my career. Skill Development with ICAEW We also took part in a workshop hosted by ICAEW that focused on enhancing skills. This session emphasized the significance of adaptability and continuous learning in our journeys. We delved into skills like effective communication, leadership and problem solving discussing how these skills can be applied across various roles and industries. The workshop encouraged us to embrace a growth mindset stay flexible and actively seek learning opportunities. It reinforced my belief in the importance of being versatile and ready for career scenarios. Expression of Gratitude I am deeply thankful to Bright Network, for orchestrating such a comprehensive and enriching program. The dedication and expertise of the teachers from Deloitte, PwC and ICAEW have had an impact on my career growth. Reflecting on My Summer Internship at EY: A Journey of Growth and Learning As I transition back to college after an enriching summer internship at EY, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey of growth, learning, and professional development. This experience has not only broadened my horizons but also equipped me with invaluable skills and insights that I am eager to bring back to my academic life. Embracing the EY Culture From day one, I was welcomed into a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. EY’s commitment to building a better working world was evident in every project and interaction. The supportive environment, coupled with the guidance of experienced mentors, made it easy to adapt and thrive. Key Learnings and Experiences Real-World Application of Theoretical Knowledge: Working on diverse projects allowed me to apply the theoretical concepts I learned in college to real-world scenarios. Whether conducting financial analyses or participating in strategy sessions, each task reinforced the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry. Developing Technical Skills: The internship provided hands-on experience with advanced tools and technologies. As my internship at PwC comes to a close, here's some advice that I would like to share. 1. Find learning opportunities in otherwise "mindless" tasks During your internship, you're more than likely going to receive tasks that don't have a huge critical thinking aspect. These tasks may feel "mindless" and tedious, but if you look at it in a different way, you can find a learning opportunity. Take these tasks as an opportunity to learn the process behind a tax or audit engagement. Learn the terms associated with your field of work. 2. Network, Network, Network You never know what could happen in the future and who you could be reaching out to for a potential job. Take advantage of the situation that you've worked so hard to be in. You obviously know how to network, you've landed an internship in accounting. These people can become some of the most valuable connections you ever make. 3. Ask questions I know this may sound cliche, but it's truly one of the best things you can do as an intern. Asking questions allows you to truly soak up as much information as you can. What you want to get out of your internship is what you are willing to put into it. Instead of focusing your questions on how to merely get a task done, ask questions on the "why" behind a process. This will allow you to learn a lot more at a much faster clip. 4. Upskill yourself I'm a huge believer in the fact that you are in complete charge of your career. There are going to be times during your internship where you will have a lighter load of work than usual. Instead of waiting around for the next task, branch out. Ask if you can help on other engagements or take advantage of the exceptional learning opportunities provided by your firm. This will prove to be highly beneficial in your future. 5. Find where you can add value to your team Even as an intern, you can find areas where you can add value to your team. You are uniquely situated in a generation that is growing up with very advanced technology. Take advantage of it. Learn how to become a better planner or communicator. Learn how to read data, identify trends, interpret the trends, and add value to your team. 6. Do all the little things right Do all of your compliance tasks ASAP, accept or decline meeting invites, attend intern socials/company events, respond to emails in a timely manner, and schedule routine meetings with your coaches. This is a very easy way to show that you are responsible, have good time management skills, and you are eager to complete your tasks. Be an asset to your team, not a liability. This is not an exhaustive list, but these are a few items that stuck out to me and led me to a very rewarding experience this summer at PwC Milwaukee. I cannot thank my team (Susan Frey, Andrew Modder, CPA, Elijah Mapes, Alexa Peter, CPA, Matt Jager, Jonathan H., Marcos Quiroz, CPA) enough for their willingness and eagerness to teach me the reigns, even when they were extremely busy.

I'm delighted to announce that I have accepted my offer to join KPMG UK as an Audit Apprentice (Glasgow)! Like myself, many are familiar that the journey of seeking apprenticeships can be daunting, filled with highs and lows - all while balancing academic studies. The effort required to keep pushing despite the setbacks is often underestimated. It’s vital that we use rejection as a motivator for our success, never let it hold you back! Today, I stand before you with a simple message: age should never be a barrier to your dreams, ambitions, or aspirations. Too often, society imposes limits based on age, relegating individuals into predefined boxes of what they can or cannot achieve. Age is merely a number, a marker of the passage of time, but it should never define who you are or what you are capable of accomplishing. Whether you are in your teens, twenties, thirties, fifties, or beyond, your potential knows no bounds. Indeed, with age comes wisdom, experience, and a wealth of knowledge that can propel you forward on your journey. Embrace the wisdom gained from years of living, but never let it become an excuse for complacency or inaction. Instead, channel your experiences into fuel for your ambitions. Let them ignite a fire within you, driving you to reach new heights and conquer new challenges. Remember, every setback is an opportunity for growth, and every obstacle is a chance to prove your resilience. Taking this into account, as a 16 year old coming into a “Big 4” financial firm I am fully aware of the challenges that I will face however, every challenge is an opportunity, every setback is a lesson and every success, a milestone on the path to greatness.
