Not long now until Learning Live kicks off, and L&D leaders come together to discuss their key challenges. Today we’re covering off another challenge: leadership development.  It’s a challenge that can be intensified by hybrid or remote working, where potential leaders might not get the mentorship contact that they need. They might miss out on the experiences that will help them develop into a leader. In short, the social aspect of being sat next to each other is missed. While we can’t fully recreate that feeling, we can certainly try and replicate it. That’s where our social learning experiences come in. We’ve created several projects recently which bring groups of learners together, whether they’re a totally remote group or a hybrid group. The key here is that many of these groups are mixed-level and mixed-seniority. This gives everyone a chance to benefit from different perspectives and knowledge.  It can be tricky to bring these groups together, especially depending on IT restrictions. But if you can get it right, there’s so much value to be had when people can learn from each other. (You can read a bit more about that in our social learning blog, we'll link it in the comments.) Reinforcement is EVERYTHING If you are relying on your L&D team or external coaches and trainers as if the limited amount of time they spend with your team is going to magically transform them, you are in for a rude awakening and negative ROI. Training is just the beginning. The magic happens between you and your team in the daily interactions and feedback. Yes, it's work, but it's your job if you fancy yourself a leader. Reinforcement is EVERYTHING. As a leader, a learner, and a champion of a learning culture, I know how integral reinforcement is to cultivating the behaviors you want to see - and curtailing the less desirable behaviors you want to end. Did you love the way your team member communicated their proposal in a recent meeting? Then you need to tell them specifically what you loved about it. And you must continue to reinforce this behavior when you see it. Do you want to help a team member break a habit of telling a customer what they want, instead of listening to what they are saying and asking powerful questions? Then you need to share this specific feedback in a constructive way on a timely basis. Our brains need continual reinforcement to build a good habit and to break a bad one. Studies have shown that positive reinforcement is crucial to learning a new habit, as it helps drive the changes in the basal ganglia that help facilitate habit formation.
