We’re super proud to share that one of our VR learning experiences, created in partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant, is now available on the Meta App Lab store. This innovative VR training has already seen plenty of use within NHSBT’s training programme. It simulates the process of testing blood for lifesaving transfusions, guiding users through the process of identifying the correct unit of blood for a transfusion. With the learning now available on App Lab, NHSBT recommends it to secondary schools, colleges, and universities to encourage young people into transfusion science careers. It’s also given transfusion patients an opportunity to understand what goes into this kind of lifesaving procedure. Have you ever had a blood test, biopsy, or blood transfusion? Then a biomedical scientist will have helped you. And to help provide effective training to these vital workers, NHS Blood and Transplant has partnered with us on a VR experience that gives these scientists a way to safely practise blood crossmatching. It’s the subject of a PhD project at The Manchester Metropolitan University and has been used across 50 hospitals and NHS blood centres across England and Wales. And it secured an accolade at last year’s AIXR Awards! 2024 has been another incredibly busy year, with plenty of challenges but many wins, and it’s been a very rewarding year too, all thanks to the wonderful Make Real team. From a Gold win with LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) to an XR accolade for NHS Blood and Transplant, to projects with our lovely existing partners like Network Rail and NATS, and building relationships with new ones, from continuing to explore and study how we use AI with London Business School, to delivering our most accessible course ever with Lloyds Banking Group – we've got so much to be proud of. We’re grateful as ever to everyone we’ve worked with, from our partners, to our freelancers, and our clients. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year. And we’ll catch you from 2nd January on the other side! 

Did you catch our Director of Learning, Sophie, with the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) on Monday, sharing insights on how you can effectively use immersive tech for learning? If not, no worries – you can find the recording, along with the presentation slides and the Q&A on the IEC website! Sophie walked the audience through why immersive and game-based learning can be so powerful, leading to results like 14% higher skill acquisition compared to traditional lectures and assignments. She then gave just a few examples of how we’ve used immersive learning to great effect, whether it’s for practical skills like evacuating a tunnel, or creating a psychologically safe space for learners to practise difficult conversations. Big thank you to Ian Gardner and IEC for hosting us, and to the audience as well for getting involved with some great questions like how does game design influence our learning design, and how do we work with our partners to measure return on investment. We wanted to give a shout out to one 2025 highlight for team Make Real and what’s better, you can try it for yourself! We’re so proud to have worked with Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) this year on This is Me, a disability and neurodiversity module. They wanted to help everyone have more confident and empowered conversations about disability so that everyone could thrive and love where they work.  It’s also our most accessible project ever and we’re grateful to LBG to have had the opportunity to learn so much from it. It has a number of configurable options that go beyond ‘the basics’, including British Sign Language interpretation for all video content.   We worked with accessible end-user groups throughout the design process, to try out solutions and keep us on the right track. Because, after all, what’s the point in creating learning that’s about diversity, equity, and inclusion, if it’s not accessible for everyone? Even better, LBG has made this training available to anyone – you don’t just need to work at Lloyds to benefit from this incredible resource. So, whether you want to learn more for yourself, or want to take the learnings into your small business or corporate organisation, you can explore how to be inclusive. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing contributions from LBG employees who shared their own experiences of disability and neurodiversity. Last week we donned our glad rags for one final awards ceremony – the 8th International AIXR XR Awards, where two of our projects were shortlisted. We were very proud that our work with NHS Blood and Transplant on Crossmatching was a finalist for the XR Healthcare Solution of the Year and St. James’s Place’s Place Empathy Training was shortlisted in the XR Enterprise Solution of the Year.   While we didn’t snag a win for these projects, we’re still delighted to have been recognised with the shortlists among some incredibly strong and innovative competition. And we were especially pleased that the work with NHSBT was recognised with an XR Accolade for exceptional work in Medical Procedure Training.   We’re excited to continue our partnerships in immersive learning with NHSBT and SJP into the new year and thank them for their support in putting together the award entries.
