today I've launched my latest research report, the Arts Students' Union Studios and Workshops Report 2024. The research explores art students' views on the provision of studios and workshops, how students interact with these vital creative spaces, and how art schools can ensure they are making studios and workshops as accessible as possible to their students. Studios are the primary space on campus in which most art students learn, particularly those students who are on ‘making’ courses. They are spaces where students are taught, can make and create, can receive feedback on their works-in-progress, as well as exhibit their work during open studio events. They are a vital component in the successful completion of an arts education. Workshops are specialist making spaces, where students can access tools and resources they need to create their work, under the supervision of expert technicians. Due to health and safety concerns, most workshops require staff to be present while students work in these spaces, in contrast to studios and open access areas. Through our research, we found only 17% of respondents have access to a designated workshop or studio space at home, showing the importance of access to on-campus studios and workshops. We hope this research will be useful for anyone involved in teaching and learning (particularly in the arts) and provide valuable insight into how arts students use studios and workshops as the primary learning spaces throughout the course of their studies. The report highlights the value arts students see in access to on-campus resources as much as the online arena, and how this intersects with ideas around community and belonging. I would like to pay particular tribute to Marina Marbella for the beautiful design of the report, turning ideas from the research into a visual language that furthers our understanding of the findings. The heartbreaking and unexpected closure of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia last week has surfaced dangerous trend for the arts in recent years. It feels like we are all being shaken by loss after loss of cultural touchstones. There are many reasons we know about for the closure, and some still being uncovered. But one is clearly a diminishing value being placed on the arts in schools. Despite national surveys showing the public agrees that the arts are a necessary, the arts face being squeezed out of K-12 schools. There is a narrowing range of core subjects that count as academic. Fewer resources and decreased attention mean that students are not taking arts subjects once they cease to be compulsory. Arguments to bring the arts back have been made about how arts integration leads to all sorts of other positive academic outcomes - like increases in test scores and math achievement. 👉While all of this is well and good, this is NOT the right way to argue for the arts. The arts are valuable NOT because of their connection to other academic subjects, they are essential to a well-rounded education, a well lived life, an inspired culture, and to an open mind. Let’s stop requiring more of the arts than of other subjects. Fleisher Art Memorial Moore College of Art and Design Upenn Undergraduate Fine Art Temple University Drexel University

Very proud that Art UK will be alongside the Government Art Collection in a major research study around visual literacy that will be carried out by Oxford University’s Department of Education. It is being generously funded by Sybil Robson Orr and Matthew Orr. Picture This: The Robson Orr Visual Literacy Research Initiative is a three-year study which in the words of the funders aims to “…provide academic research to support the establishment of visual literacy as one of the key pillars of education. The project will measure how the observation and discussion of artworks in schools can support the development of visual literacy and oracy skills in students. It will also evaluate how these skills – the ability to critically observe, analyse, question and interpret images – enhances students’ potential for success in life in an increasingly image-saturated world and fast-changing workplace.” Art UK's Superpower of Looking visual literacy programme in primary schools, (which is being funded by Freelands Foundation) will form a core part of the research study. "I wanted to explore how belonging would manifest in a post-pandemic university setting where the buzz of campus life had been interrupted." 🤝 The Belonging Project at University College Dublin delved into the nuanced theme of ‘belonging’ in a university, bringing together written contributions from UCD staff, alumni and students with visual interpretations by National College of Art & Design (NCAD) students. It's time to prioritise Youth Arts in South Australia. The Royal Academy’s campaign reminds us that "art is a serious subject." As South Australia strives to empower young voices, we too face a challenge: ensuring creativity has a place in our schools and communities. When we prioritise arts education, we unlock the potential for creative thinking—a skill critical not just in the arts, but across all industries. Investing in youth arts isn’t just enrichment; it cultivates resilience, empathy, and innovation. I believe young people’s creativity can shape a vibrant, dynamic South Australia. Let’s make space for creativity, celebrate diverse thinking, and champion the arts as fundamental to a complete education. 💡 If you agree, share a creative experience you had as a child below. ⤵️ #YouthArts #ArtsEducation #Creativity #SouthAustralia #FutureSkills #YouthEmpowerment

Bridging Arts and Technology: The Innovative Spaces of Higher Education As someone deeply invested in both the arts and technology, the unveiling of the Student Hall for Exploration and Development (SHED) at New York’s Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) fills me with excitement. It represents a growing trend in higher education: the deliberate integration of arts exploration and hands-on science to foster creativity, collaboration, and idea generation. The SHED, a recent addition to RIT’s suburban Rochester campus, exemplifies this trend with its ambitious architecture designed by Boston-based William Rawn Associates in partnership with MRB Group. It boldly juxtaposes fine arts performance spaces with industrial maker spaces, creating an atmosphere of vibrant creativity and cross-disciplinary interaction. The design philosophy behind the SHED, as articulated by Cliff Gayley, principal at William Rawn Associates, is to create an environment that encourages individuals to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new experiences. The atrium serves as a metaphorical town square, fostering community engagement, while the maker spaces are likened to bustling marketplace vendors, promoting collaboration and innovation. RIT President David Munson underscores the importance of integrating arts and humanities into technological education, recognizing the value of creativity and critical thinking skills in shaping well-rounded graduates. Despite the pressure many students face to pursue lucrative tech careers, RIT remains committed to nurturing creativity and artistic expression among its diverse student body. RIT is not alone in this endeavor. Institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University, and Princeton University have also embraced the intersection of arts and technology in their educational programs. These campuses feature innovative spaces designed to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and exploration, showcasing the transformative power of integrating arts and technology in higher education. In navigating an increasingly complex and interconnected world, the fusion of arts and technology offers a pathway to innovation, creativity, and intellectual growth. The SHED at RIT stands as a testament to the profound impact of creating spaces that inspire curiosity, collaboration, and lifelong learning. #Arts #Culture #Architecture #Space #Design #HigherEducation #Rochester #Boston #Princeton #Virginia #Tech #Intersectional #Education #Youth #ArtandTech #CrossDisciplinary #Creativity #STEM #STEAM #Interdisciplinary #FutureOfWork #DigitalArts #CollaborativeSpaces #DesignThinking
