Did you see the 10th annual report Australian Charities Report? It’s a great resource to share with your Board - especially those who aren't actively involved in the NFP or charity sector and might not be across the major trends. Of interest to us at Benefolk was: 📈 Unlike 2021, all charity sizes experienced revenue growth in 2022 💵 Total revenue increased by $11 billion to a record $200 billion, but at the same time expenses increased by $21 billion. 😲 The net income figure recorded across the sector – $5.7 billion – was the lowest figure the ACNC has ever reported. ✳ While the sector’s assets grew by 8.3% to $457 billion during 2022, total liabilities increased by 11.5% to reach $158 billion. 💳 In 2022, the charity sector’s total expenses increased by $22 billion (12.6%) to $195.8 billion. The increase of 12.6% was twice the rate of inflation. We are grateful to Sue Woodward AM and her team at Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission for ensuring this data continues to be shared widely with all Australians, to help us better understand our important charitable sector.

Local Government and Charities Great report by Probono economics- 'Tethered Together'. It really highlights what a lot of charities are experiencing at the moment as local government struggles to make ends meet. This places a burden on the third sector to deliver for less, but also pick up those who fall through the gaps as services are cut or barriers to support raised. There is in my opinion still hope. By open and frank conversations along with a commitment to work in true partnership there are opportunities to reshape and deliver services that meet the needs of those needing support, local government and charities. 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀... When I was young there were just a handful or so it seemed. Our economy was less mature then and many businesses just hadn't been educated around being 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘧𝘶𝘭 of taking up a cause. There are some 𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 out there... Logos that stand out ("𝗥 𝘂 𝗢𝗞" springs to mind) and newer charities that bring awareness to problems I/we didn’t even know existed... ...and even charities that come with 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀! So why 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 - for 2024? → They get 𝗺𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 with (over the last 5 years) 𝟳𝟮% making it into the community programs. This gives me 𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥. → In a time when 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 wants to do everything for us, it seems 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 to aim to get money back into the system from the "𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗽." Small business operators will understand this. And it was 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 that led 𝟯𝘅 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 people to create the charity. → 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, a keystone for young individuals—and 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 can make one of the 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀—and in turn, I am guessing one of the 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. → Oh, and it was the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸/hours that I ever did (from memory).
