Canada needs to invest significantly in upgrading and expanding its municipal environmental infrastructure, particularly water and wastewater systems, in order to meet the demands of population growth, new housing and climate goals. Fortunately this won't require reinventing the wheel, thanks to the types of visionary innovations and resources being introduced by Veolia. On 31 March 2023, I had the opportunity to take part in a very informative webinar organised by the System Dynamics Center with the title "Drafting of KLHS RPJMD / RPJPD". The event provided in-depth insights on how the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA/KLHS) should be prepared with reference to the Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD) and Regional Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPD). SEA/KLHS is a strategic document that is not only a guide for development in a region, but also an instrument to ensure that every development activity takes place in a sustainable manner and takes into account the impact on the environment. The importance of having in-depth knowledge in the preparation of SEA/KLHS based on RPJMD/RPJPD is crucial. First, it helps to ensure that the policies and programmes proposed in the RPJMD and RPJPD not only meet economic and social development needs, but also safeguard the environment. By understanding current environmental conditions and potential future threats, policymakers can integrate sustainable environmental management strategies. In addition, this webinar also underlined the importance of involving all stakeholders in the SEA/KLHS preparation process. Involving communities, academics and the private sector in the consultation and decision-making process not only increases transparency, but also ensures that the resulting SEA/KLHS reflects the needs and aspirations of all parties concerned.
