Although the term #biopolymer generally refers to a #macromolecule of biological interest, it is now primarily associated with #bioplastics characterized by a high degree of #biodegradability. Biodegradation is an irreversible natural decomposition process, which ultimately results in the complete alteration of the original material’s properties and structure. This review provides a comprehensive overview of medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHAs), biodegradable biopolymers produced by microorganisms. These mcl-PHAs are showing promise as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics due to their greater ductility and flexibility. They have potential applications in various fields, including biomedicine, packaging, biocomposites, water treatment, and energy. The future research will focus on improving production techniques, ensuring economic viability, and overcoming challenges associated with industrial implementation.
