At the end of last year, we were tasked with creating a one day course to support HSE professionals in a global marine contractor. As the company diversifies, moves from Tier 1 to operator status and expands their technical portfolio, they wanted to ensure this department was well placed to respond to the fast paced challenges presented by the energy transition. The aims of Strategic Planning for Oil and Gas Businesses in the Energy Transition were therefore 2 fold: 💡Understanding the direction the company is taking in the expansion of their services in support of the transition 💡Understanding their client's drivers and regulatory requirements to support their projects from tender through to execution A solid day of challenge and discussion followed. We showed that the transition is truly that, not an overnight quick fix. There can, and should be several approaches, which don't necessary have to include new windfarms or tree planting. Every journey is unique. There is space for everyone in the new energy landscape but without a robust, and holistic strategy, many companies will flounder. Organisations need to understand their strengths and weaknesses, the threats and opportunities and act accordingly. Companies need to take the lead, not wait to follow. Get out there, innovate, inspire, plan and strategise to be bold and take brave but calculated commercial decisions. The world 🌍 will not wait for you❗ Find out more 🔗in comments 👇 #energytransition #netzero #businesstrategy #businessplanning

The #oil and #gas #construction sector in the United States faces significant #challenges with #laborshortages projected for #2025. I emphasize this issue repeatedly because it's #critical —many are #unprepared and have yet to establish #plans to manage the #risks ahead effectively. My top #recommendation is to prioritize forming #partnerships with other #tradecontractors who can address #gaps in #capabilities or #resources before challenges arise. Always have a #contingencyplan ready to ensure #resilience and #adaptability! Several factors contribute to this issue: Labor Demand vs. Supply: There is an ongoing mismatch between the demand for #skilledtrade workers and the available #workforce. Sectors such as #energy, #manufacturing, and large-scale #constructionprojects are driving up #demand. For example, significant investments in #energyinfrastructure, such as #pipelines and #renewableenergy projects, require #specializedlabor, which is already in #shortsupply. #AgingWorkforce and #SkillsGap: A large portion of the construction workforce is aging, and younger generations show less interest in #vocational trades due to perceived stigma and preferences for #flexiblework environments. The average age of craft workers is increasing, leading to a shrinking pool of experienced labor. Impact on #ProjectCosts and #Timelines: Labor shortages are already leading to #increasedwages, #reducedproductivity, and extended project timelines. These #trends are expected to #persist or #worsen unless there are targeted efforts to address the workforce gap. For example, during previous labor shortages in the energy sector, productivity dropped by up to 40% in #criticaltasks. To address these challenges, companies are exploring solutions such as improved productivity measures, greater use of modular and off-site construction techniques, and #strategicrecruitment efforts, including #partnerships with #technicalschools and initiatives to attract underrepresented groups to the industry. If these shortages are not mitigated, they could hinder the timely execution of many projects slated for 2025 and beyond. The industry will need to focus on workforce development and efficiency improvements to meet the growing demand. #Strategy #LetsWorkTogether Peak Growth Ventures #Electrical #Instrumentation #RNG #Midstream #Pipelines #Pigging #ILI #PigZilla #PigTracking #Survey #PipelineIntegrity #FacilityConstruction #AGM

Imperatives for Operational Excellence in the Indigenous Oil and Gas Upstream Sector! As a key industry player, I can confirm that achieving operational excellence is not just a goal but a necessity for sustained growth and competitiveness. Here are some key areas to ponder: >Health, Safety and Environment (#HSE) HSE is paramount in the oil and gas industry due to the inherent risks involved. Indigenous companies must prioritize HSE by implementing robust safety protocols, regular training, and strict compliance with regulatory standards. Adopting a proactive safety culture can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and environmental incidents, ensuring the well-being of employees and the communities in which they operate. >Community & People (#communityandpeople) The oil and gas industry relies on skilled professionals, so developing and retaining top talent is crucial. Indigenous companies should create supportive environments with continuous learning and professional development through training, mentorship, and competitive compensation. Prioritizing community is also essential for success. Strong relationships with local communities foster trust and support, vital for smooth operations. Investing in community well-being, education, and development enhances corporate reputation. This focus on people and community drives long-term growth and resilience, benefiting both the company and the community. >#Planning Effective planning is essential for operational excellence. This involves long term strategic planning as well as detailed project planning to ensure that all aspects of operations are efficiently coordinated. Oil and gas companies must develop comprehensive plans that address exploration, production, and evacuation activities while considering regulatory requirements, and technological advancements. Proactive planning helps in mitigating risks, optimizing resource utilization, and achieving organizational objectives. >Controlling Operating #CostperBarrel One of the critical metrics for operational efficiency in the oil and gas industry is the operating cost per barrel. Indigenous companies must continuously seek ways to reduce these costs without compromising on quality and safety. This can be achieved through process optimization, technology adoption, and strategic partnerships. Additionally, efficient supply chain management and procurement practices can further drive down costs, ensuring that companies remain competitive. >Sound #InfrastructureManagement Infrastructure management is crucial for the reliability and efficiency of oil and gas operations. Indigenous companies should develop and maintain robust infrastructure that meets their operational needs. This includes investing in state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring proper maintenance and upgrades, and adopting best practices. Effective infrastructure management enhances operational efficiency, minimizes downtime, and reduces the risk of costly disruptions.

Managing Contractors, a perennial problem. I spent the time between 1984 and 2008 as a Contractor to Major Oil and Gas Companies mainly across the ME And Africa. I was with a Major Service Company for 16 of those years and we took Safety of our people as a value, not a priority. However in all that time I rarely, if ever, saw our Clients look at our Safety Culture, they only looked at our TRIF (Total Recordable Incident Frequency) and gave us grief if it was too high. When I became a Safety Manager for Operators after 2008 one of my areas of focus was always to help Contractors and especially their sub contractors to improve. This meant looking at their behaviour and working with them to make incremental, sometimes major, improvements in the way they worked for us. Not just reacting to their TRIF. At the end of the day we all won as I favoured contractors with good safety cultures in my tender evaluations, so those who took part in my initiatives improved and won more work as a result. It was good to find case studies of assessment of contractor cultures on behalf of Clients by dss+ such as this one attached for a wind farm development. How do you treat your contractors ? As partners or as problems? Are you willing to invest in their culture ? Possibly not but I believe that this is a mindset that needs to change, as the skill levels of our contractors is gradually reducing as shortages of skilled labour increases. This is leading to increasing losses for clients and contractors who both suffer. This was a topic of debate at the #energy24 conference, organised by the #ShellAlumniNetwork, where a panel discussion by the industry leaders placed focus on their clear concerns around the issue. So, How are you trying to improve your contractors' performance ? #contractorsafetymanagement #transformcultures #savelives
