The Freshwater Challenge is a country-led initiative that aims to support, integrate and accelerate the restoration of 300,000 km of degraded rivers and 350 million hectares of degraded wetlands by 2030, as well as conserve priority freshwater ecosystems. 46 countries have joined. The Freshwater Challenge supports alignment and integration of freshwater ecosystems across national plans to deliver global goals on climate, water, disaster risk reduction, sustainable development and biodiversity – including Target 2 and Target 3 of the GBF. Happy World Environment Day 2024 World Environment Day is dedicated to celebrating our ecosystem, and strenghten advocacy towards awareness around environmental action. Theme for 2024 World Environment day This year’s World Environment Day campaign focuses on land restoration, desertification and building drought resilience with the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration” This year marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a critical call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Building drought resilience involves implementing strategies that enhance the adaptive capacity of communities and ecosystems. As the global community continues to face environmental challenges, it is imperative to prioritize land restoration, combat desertification, and strengthen drought resilience. #Mangrove ecosystems are critical for food, livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate. Join us next week at #COP29 at an event that will highlight how including mangrove-positive targets in countries' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) can be an important catalyst to mobilize action and finance for mangrove conservation and restoration, and further enhance mitigation contributions. Through a moderated panel discussion composed of diverse mangrove stakeholders, attendees will learn about new and ongoing initiatives to implement and mobilize mangrove-climate action and finance. Restoring degraded drylands through sustainable practices and community empowerment is crucial in the fight against desertification and climate change impacts. Arid Lands Information Network is making a difference by empowering communities in East Africa with innovative agricultural techniques and soil conservation methods to rehabilitate lands and boost drought resilience. Our work focuses on holistic land management approaches, such as water harvesting, and conservation agriculture. By involving local communities in the implementation and decision-making processes, we ensures long-term sustainability and ownership of these initiatives. Rehabilitating drylands not only helps mitigate climate change effects but also enhances food security, improves livelihoods, and protects biodiversity. Alongside over 100 organisations and individuals, Caledonian Climate is calling on governments at #COP16Colombia to urgently prioritise action on water and #wetlands. Wetlands cover only around 6% of the Earth’s surface, but they are home to 40% of all known plant and animal species. What's more, Scotland alone holds 13% of the world’s blanket bog, making it hugely significant in the global ecosystem. We're arguing for action to be taken on water and wetlands in the negotiations at COP 16 and in efforts to implement the Global Biodiversity Framework. The Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR) connects MPAs from four countries 🇨🇴🇨🇷🇪🇨🇵🇦 The CMAR was established in 2004 and has now expanded from a collection of 5 to 10 MPAs. Connecting separate MPAs protects the migratory pathways between them, allowing animals to be protected over a wider area.
