Happy World Sexual Health Day! Let’s talk about why we invest in pleasure 🌸 The Case for Her uses its investments in underfunded areas of women’s health as opportunities to learn. One thing we learned through our menstruation portfolio was that MH educators working in classroom settings were often restricted from discussing sex, even when asked by the girls themselves. Education can be a powerful tool to drive progress for bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights, and integration of MHH and SRHR can strengthen understanding of common biological processes across the life course. So in 2019, The Case for Her opened a new portfolio, Female Sexual Pleasure, where we embrace sex-positivity, where sex is seen as a positive, healthy, and natural aspect of human life where people should be able to “embody, explore, and learn about their sexuality and gender without judgment or shame.” What we’ve learned since then is that taking a pleasure-inclusive approach to sexual health and sex education has widespread impacts that result in better uptake of reproductive health products and services and better sexual health outcomes. You can learn more about the benefits or embracing a positive pleasure approach via our incredible partner The Pleasure Project here: https://lnkd.in/dqcFmfDY #SexualHealthMatters #SexEd #PleasureGap #GenderEquality

#SRHR cannot be achieved without addressing unequal gender and power relations—and that means engaging men and boys. As Avni Amin, Maria Lohan, Magaly Marques and Mark Tomlinson write in a new BMJ editorial, “It is no longer a question of whether we engage men and boys in sexual and reproductive health and rights, but how.” For example: -Some services deliver women’s family planning advice by mobile phone in countries where men control both women’s use of mobile phones and birth spacing choices. In part, this means we must ensure that male partners understand the importance of respecting women’s bodily autonomy and supporting their choices. - Boys are an important part of the solution for issues such as gender based sexual violence, teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. We cannot teach sex education without adequately challenging boys about their norms, beliefs and behaviours with respect to sexual consent and safe sex. Happy World Sexual Health Day! As a Next Gen Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights Fellow and community development worker, I believe that positive relationships are the foundation of healthy sexuality. Today, let's talk about how we can promote and advocate for positive relationships while prioritizing our sexual health, especially among adolescents and young persons. Positive relationships are built on mutual respect, trust, and open communication. They allow us to navigate the complexities of sexuality with confidence and joy. But how can we help teenagers and adolescents promote overall sexual health through positive relationships? Here are some ways: 1. Encourage healthy communication: Teach young people to express their feelings, desires, and boundaries in a respectful and assertive manner. 2. Foster emotional intelligence: Help them develop self-awareness, empathy, and self-regulation skills to navigate relationships with ease. 3. Promote mutual respect: Encourage young people to value each other's autonomy, individuality, and consent. 4. Provide comprehensive sex education: Equip young people with accurate information about sexual health, rights, and responsibilities. This is why I laugh at people, especially parents who think their children are too young. Isssokay. 🤣 5. Create safe spaces: Establish environments where young people can discuss relationships, sexuality, and health without fear or judgment. We need to learn this. Stop shushing them. Allow them talk and express themselves. In conversations, we can guide them. Let's work together to empower adolescents and young persons to build positive relationships that prioritize their sexual health and well-being. To your continued sexual health 😉 Oluwadamilola Abe, NEXT GEN SRHR FELLOW #WorldSexualHealthDay #PositiveRelationships #SexualHealthMatters #NextGENSRHRFellow

Empowering Adolescents with Contraceptive Access As we strive for a healthier future, it's important to ensure that young people have access to accurate information and resources about reproductive health and this can be done by addressing critical aspects of adolescent health. Contraceptive access Ensure that young people have access to and can use contraceptives effectively to: *Prevent unintended pregnancies *Reduce sexually transmitted infections (STIs) *Empower informed choices Some of the barriers to accessing contraceptives include: limited knowledge and awareness, social and cultural stigma, inadequate healthcare services and financial constraints etc It's is important that these barriers are addressed by conducting comprehensive sex education, have confidential and youth-friendly healthcare services, offer accessible and affordable contraceptives and encourage open conversations with the adolescents about contraceptive options, consent, and healthy relationships. When adolescents are supported and educated, unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are reduced and gender equality and empowerment is promoted. Together we can create a supportive environment for adolescents to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. #ContraceptiveAwareness #ReproductiveHealth #PublicHealth

Did you know? According to KPHC 2009, 24% of the country’s total population is made up of the adolescent youths aged 10-19 years old which translates to 9.2 million. The medium age for involvement in sexual intercourse is 18.2 years for the girls and 17.6 years for men It is also reported that 22% of the boys had their first sex by the age of 15 and 12% of girls had their first sex at the same age. 37% of girls and 44% of boys are reported to have had sex between the age of 15-19 years Around 18% of the adolescent girls aged 15-19 have begun childbearing and 26% of women aged 20-24 years had started childbearing by the age 18.1 and almost 2/3 of the estimated 345,000 pregnancies among the adolescent girls between 15-19 years old are unintended in Kenya as per KDHS, 2009. As a result of this, comprehensive sexual reproductive education is necessary since it equips the adolescent youths with information to enable them make informed decisions about their sexuality. On World Sexual Health Day, we take a moment to emphasize the critical role that sexual health plays in our overall physical, emotional, and social well-being. This day serves as a global platform to break the silence around sexual health issues, encouraging open dialogue that is often hindered by cultural taboos and stigma. Sexual health is not just about the prevention of diseases or unintended pregnancies—it’s about ensuring that every person can enjoy safe, consensual, and pleasurable sexual experiences. It involves understanding and respecting one’s own body, as well as the bodies of others. It includes access to comprehensive sexual education, which empowers individuals to make informed choices and engage in responsible behaviors. It also means having access to healthcare services that are inclusive, non-judgmental, and responsive to the needs of all people, regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or ability. Today, we advocate for the dismantling of barriers that prevent people from accessing the information and care they need. This includes fighting against discrimination, ensuring the availability of contraception and reproductive health services, and supporting the rights of those in marginalized communities who are often disproportionately affected by sexual health issues. World Sexual Health Day is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to creating a world where sexual health is recognized as a vital part of human rights and dignity. Let’s continue to foster a culture where sexual health is discussed openly, resources are accessible to all, and every person feels empowered to express their sexuality in a safe, consensual, and healthy manner. #worldsexualhealthday #staywoke
