We have drawn up plans with Worthing’s community of independent commercial fishermen to transform the town’s unutilised rotunda into a new facility where they can prepare and sell their fresh fish. 🐟 Since the rotunda at Windsor Lawns was boarded up in 2021 following a spate of antisocial behaviour, we have been in talks with Worthing Fishermen’s Society to create a dedicated facility for its members. After years of planning, the project can be brought to life after securing external funding from the Marine Management Organisation, a public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which is creating a prosperous future for seas, coasts and communities. Thanks to additional funding from our Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Neighbourhood Fund, Sussex Bay® and the marine conservation charity Sea-Changers, the facility can now be repurposed to host a cold storage facility, community notice board, ice making machine and sales area. The plan, which was approved by Worthing’s planning committee in October, will present an opportunity to revive the town’s once-thriving fishing scene. Today, there are only a select group of fishermen on its shingle shore keeping the culture and businesses alive in the town. Work on transforming the rotunda is getting underway from Monday 20th January, with the facility due to be complete in Spring 2025.

(sharing from Cheetah Conservation Fund) Just a little more than a century ago, there were still nearly 100,000 cheetahs in the wild. The cats were found throughout most of Africa and into Asia, through the Arabian Peninsula to the Caspian region, and into India and Pakistan. But, over the last century, cheetahs have disappeared from most of their historical range. Today, the cats are found in only about 9% of their past distributional range - and there are less than 7,500 mature cheetahs remaining in the wild. In Asia, cheetahs disappeared from the wild almost entirely during the first half of the twentieth century. Asiatic cheetahs now persist only in Iran, and there are believed to be less than 40 individuals remaining. In Africa, cheetahs also occupy just a tiny portion of their historic range. Most of the continent’s remaining cheetahs are found in East Africa and within a swath of Southern Africa that extends into six countries – Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, and Zambia. While cheetahs are currently classified as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the Northeast African cheetah, a subspecies found in the Horn of Africa, was reclassified as Endangered last year. Two cheetah subspecies - the Asiatic cheetah and the Northwest African (or Saharan) cheetah - are both currently listed as Critically Endangered. Poll Shows Strong Support for Strengthening Sage-Grouse Habitat Protections Hunters and anglers have long known that sage grouse conservation benefits many species in the sagebrush steppe. It turns out the majority of Western voters also want to strengthen sage grouse conservation! A recent poll conducted by The Pew Charitable Trusts shows overwhelming support for bolstering Bureau of Land Management safeguards for greater sage-grouse habitat. The BLM is amending its sage-grouse plans to consider new science in determining how to best conserve sage-grouse habitat on public lands across 10 Western states. The survey found robust support for BLM’s planning effort in rural counties where the iconic bird is found. Read more about the report at https://lnkd.in/gWB3qJRP

The Southern Tier Land Conservancy is a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization that was founded to address a critical gap in land conservation in New York’s Southern Tier. In late 2019, Binghamton University Professor Carl Lipo, environmental professional Jeff Merrill, and local business owner and county legislator Jason Shaw observed that the region had significantly less protected land compared to other areas in New York. Their concerns were validated through conversations with the Waterman Conservation and Education Center, Cornell Cooperative Extension, EL Rose Land Trust, Chenango Land Trust, Finger Lakes Land Trust, Broome County Parks, and Broome County Planning, as well as the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. These discussions underscored the pressing need for a locally-based organization dedicated to conservation in the Southern Tier. The founders then approached the Land Trust Alliance, a national nonprofit that empowers and mobilizes land trusts to conserve land and connect people to land. Although the Alliance typically advises against the creation of new land trusts, they recognized the Southern Tier ’s unique under-served status and endorsed the establishment of a new organization to conserve the region's lands and waters.

Only 2% of global charitable giving supports environmental organisations, as highlighted by the ClimateWorks Foundation. ✅ Every month in 2024, we are making a contribution to a grassroots environmental organisation; The Woodland Trust was our choice for May..... (They are a larger organisation than what we are looking to fund but given their live, important petition along with matching funds, we felt it right to bend this rule!) ✅ Through their Protect our Living Legends campaign they want to give the UK’s very oldest and most important trees legal protection – like endangered wildlife, castles and old buildings already have. ✅ Saving these trees is saving habitat for other species, along with the history and carbon capture that comes from the tree itself. ✅ Sign their petition here to protect our oldest trees: https://lnkd.in/gtDnRw7b ✅ The Woodland Trust are matching donations right now, so do consider joining us and having your contribution count for twice as much. Donate here: https://lnkd.in/e5BcWt9A. ✅ We’d love to hear your thoughts on this project and any others to which we should donate, please let us know in the comments. #WoodlandsTrust #CharityImpact #EnvironmentalImpact #Grassroots #ClimateCrisis #EnvironmentalFunding #LivingLegends #EveryLittleHelps #CreativeZeroCares #CharityCampaign #EnvironmentalImpact #CharityImpact #ProtectTrees

We've seen plenty of discussion about this article. Though National Parks Authorities are not charities themselves, all boards – regardless of legal setup – benefit from a diversity of skills, knowledge and experience, and inclusive practice. In addition, National Park Authorities work closely with many charities. A lack of #diversity on a #NationalPark board may have knock-on impacts on charities in partnership. Covering 10% of our country, we're hopeful that NPAs will make moves towards stronger #governance. https://lnkd.in/eMNEjnYv
