These valuable cards and case studies by the Sustaining Robust Engagement & Stewardship Working Group of the Civic Commons Learning Network, are crafted by practitioners, for practitioners to help nurture trust, expand participation, and promote advocacy through community engagement. You can use these cards to... 1️⃣ Challenge misconceptions hindering impactful outreach. Recognize that no community is homogeneous, focusing on building relationships, trust, & accountability with diverse groups. 3️⃣ Foster relationships, trust, & accountability within diverse communities. In times of funding uncertainty, arts organizations face a critical decision: Should they prioritize political advocacy over artistic programming? This question is more relevant than ever as we navigate an increasingly polarized political landscape where arts funding is often on the chopping block. How we allocate limited resources can make or break our organizations' futures. What's your stance? Agree or disagree: Arts organizations should focus more on advocacy than programming when funding is uncertain. Community foundations play a crucial role in promoting upward mobility through policy advocacy. As funders, conveners, champions, and partners, we participate in systems change efforts that dismantle barriers preventing individuals and families from reaching their full potential and help create conditions that foster economic success, power and autonomy, and dignity and belonging for all community members. To support community foundations looking to advance upward mobility and racial equity, the Urban Institute’s Upward Mobility Initiative created a new policy advocacy toolkit which walks readers through a step-by-step approach, from identifying data about local challenges to building a policy change campaign. Check out the new toolkit here: https://urbn.is/4fEKT9u.

Over the years I often find myself mentoring people who are passionate about pursuing advocacy and activism that often comes with that. I can’t say that every movement for social change I have found myself in has been 100% successful in its objective but what I can say is I have always learned from both the success and the disappointment. However having knowledge on how different forms of activism works, the pitfalls of not having clear plans, understanding how policy’s are made and the structures behind policymakers work, professional communication with government officials and successful strategic are formed are fantastic tools in advocacy and activism. I bought this book about 12 years ago and still go back to it as a reminder to myself of aspects that are vital for success. My biggest advice to those who seek my knowledge is first build relationships with the people in your local area who can influence change, plus learn about government and legal structures. Plus if you can find this book, study it and take what you need from it. Not every campaign will need everything in the book but there are basics you need. Even if it’s something as simple as better lighting in public spaces for safety of the community.
