In 2024, #politics remains a male bastion. Across the globe, only 27% of members of parliament are #WomenMPs and less than 1 in 4 parliamentary chambers is chaired by a woman. What has been steady progress, is now slowing down. By 1 October 2024, the percentage of seats held by women in national #parliaments had progressed by only 0.1 point since the start of this so-called “super election” year. How can parliaments and other stakeholders step up their action to prevent and eliminate all forms of gender-based violence offline and online, including violence generated or facilitated by #AI? What effective strategies and synergies are needed to build a sexism-free, violence-free public space? What targeted support and tools can be made available to women themselves in politics to counter the sexism and gender-based violence they face? Marking November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of #VAW, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, UN Women, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Council of the European Union and International IDEA are hosting a roundtable to discuss strategies and tools to support women in public life against #GBV online and offline. #16days More info ➡️ipu.org/GBV24

As we approach 25 November and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is pausing to reflect on the issues facing #WomenMPs and ongoing concerns around gender-based violence. The #IPU published its annual report, Women in Parliament in 2023, which uncovered some worrying truths as women left the political arena, citing burn-out and threats to both themselves and their families. Seven years after the first #MeToo revelations, shocking cases of severe physical and sexual violence against women continue to come to light. The European Union (EU) has mobilised both legislative and non-legislative tools to address this social scourge.

The rise in hate and violence against women in public life, especially women politicians, is a critical issue that demands immediate attention and action. Věra Jourová, vice-president of the European Commission, has proposes a comprehensive six-point plan to tackle this problem; "1. Condemn and De-normalize Violence: We must unequivocally condemn violence against women as unacceptable and punishable. 2. Enforce Legislation: It's crucial for EU member states to rigorously implement existing laws to investigate and prosecute offenders. 3. Support from Political Parties and Media: Political parties and media must actively encourage and defend women in politics, moving beyond tokenism to genuine promotion and support. 4. Social Media Responsibility: Online platforms need robust moderation, effective in all EU languages, and greater transparency through data sharing with researchers. 5. Education for Tolerance: Promoting online decency and tolerance through education is vital to fostering respectful digital interactions. 6. Comprehensive Data Collection: Improved data collection on online abuse is essential to fully understand and address this issue."
