I had the privilege of speaking and displaying a poster at the Rural Mental Health Conference, run by the Australian and New Zealand Mental Health Association Inc., in Cairns last week. The presentation centred around "Mental Strength Fitness in Rural Mental Healthcare: Understanding the Neuroscience of Resilience". This is such a crucial topic for child, adolescent, family and adult services. If the mental health of the workforce continues to decline, the support provided to communities will be significantly compromised. Mental wellbeing is vital for those providing services and those receiving services. There is a pressing need to move beyond self-care approaches to intentionally building mental fitness. Like a muscle, mental strength needs to be developed and strengthened over time through intentional, focused and conscious practice. Focusing on evidence-based insights into the role of neuroscience and interpersonal neurobiology in understanding professional wellbeing, the presentation provided an overview of the intricate interplay between the brain, nervous system, mind and body. A systemic and organisational commitment to individual and whole team mental strength can significantly reduce emotional overwhelm, prevent burnout and increase workforce sustainability. A planned approach, which incorporates mind-body practices into daily work schedules, is vital for increasing professional wellbeing. An overview of Mental Strength Fitness Training, recently delivered across NSW locations for rural mental healthcare workers was presented. October 10 is World Mental Health Day. Today, we emphasize the critical theme of "Mental Health at Work." The consequences of stress are becoming increasingly apparent – not just to individuals, but to organizations as a whole. Stress causes 56 percent of workers to search for a new job, resulting in high turnover costs and productivity losses. As we navigate the challenges of our modern work environments, it’s essential to prioritize mental well-being for ourselves and our teams. At the Stanford Center for Health Education, we are committed to supporting employee wellness. We're excited to offer our course, "Employee Wellness and Stress Management," developed with Dr. Grace Gengoux. You’ll gain strategies to support the self-care of the teams you lead and colleagues you influence, while also focusing on your own well-being and personal resilience: https://lnkd.in/d7STR9K3 In addition, we’re proud to share a collection of free videos on some of the most prevalent mental health conditions developed with Stanford University School of Medicine experts including Drs. Carolyn Rodriguez, M.D., Ph.D., Nina Vasan, MD, MBA, Charles DeBattista, Anna Lembke, Moises Gallegos, Axel Valle, Psy.D., Shashank V. Joshi, MD, and many more. The videos are available in English and Spanish, and designed to help individuals better understand and take steps to improve mental health: https://lnkd.in/gdSdrcrD Let’s work together to create healthier, more supportive work environments today and every day. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthMatters #EmployeeWellness

Keeping Our Mental Wellness in Research Since my initial post on LinkedIn about two years ago, I’ve always shared materials about epidemiologic methods and ongoing research that I felt would interest others. Today represents something a bit different that I also feel strongly about, and I hope others feel similarly! Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, in my career I’d never once been approached by a fellow researcher (neither epidemiologist nor physician) to have a serious discussion about burnout or the stresses of academia. As we know well, the pandemic changed many things. Now, since mid 2022, I’ve spoken with more than a dozen researchers who have struggled significantly with these issues in ways that have impacted their quality of life. This includes feelings of inadequacy and exhaustion from the need to produce high volumes of research without being ‘scooped’, to publish in high impact journals, to win large funding awards, to supervise an army of graduate students, and to join long lists of committees and review panels that lengthen one’s CV. Some of these conversations have been with clinicians so mentally and physically spent that there has been a desire to leave research and clinical practice entirely, while others were with early and mid-career researchers convinced there must be another path to success that doesn’t require such exhaustion and stress. As someone who has had similar challenges to navigate in the past, these conversations were hopefully as helpful to those individuals as they were to myself. Their willingness to share their views and their challenges was immensely appreciated and required courage to do so. What's clear is there is still lots of room to enhance how we measure contributions and productivity. World Mental Health Day is approaching on October 10. In what has been a year where the conversations about work/life balance and the search for personal happiness have continued, I wanted to share some of the themes and potential solutions that have come up in the conversations I’ve been a part of, hoping they might be useful for others. It would be a pleasure to hear additional solutions others have encountered that were also impactful. Wishing everyone continued mental wellness for 2025 and beyond. Let’s continue to be kind to each other! The value of doing so is sometimes overlooked. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalWellness #MentalHealthAwareness #AcademicMentalHealth #BurnoutPrevention #ResearchCommunity #ClinicalResearch #SupportEachOther #EvidenceBasedMedicine #SystematicReviews #HTA #RealWorldEvidence #MarketAccess

🌍 World Mental Health Day is here, and since 1992, October 10 has been dedicated to raising awareness about mental well-being globally. This year, the focus is on Mental Health at Work 🌿💼, a timely theme considering the increasing challenges employees face in the modern workplace. 📈 Did you know? Poor mental health has a profound impact on both individuals and businesses. According to Forbes, burnout is rising among employees and leaders alike. The World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognized burnout as an “occupational phenomenon” in 2019 — a major turning point in workplace mental health. A study by Sun et al. emphasizes the association between digitalization and mental health: the mediating role of well-being at work. It found that well-implemented digital strategies positively impact workplace well-being. Project Interreg CE Project DIGI-B-Well is focusing on digital transformation well-being. We’re set to empower SMEs, public authorities, and academia with the tools and strategies they need to thrive in the digital era. From digitalization, and digital era fit management to achieving true digital well-being 💻✨, we’re here to make the transition smoother and more sustainable for everyone. As we reflect on World Mental Health Day, let’s pause to consider how technology is affecting our mental health at work. How do you manage mental health at work? We’d love to hear your experiences. 💚 #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthAtWork #MentalHealth #DIGIBWELL #DigitalWellBeing #BurnoutPrevention #EmployeeWellness #InterregCentralEurope
