June’s “STRI Lights” live presentation featured Bruce Delaporte, the PEO STRI Director of Talent Management to discuss the talent management team’s strategic plans. During the 45-minute program, he said that his team has been focused on their task to “Invest In Our People,” which has been the driver of everything from recruitment, to training and development and professional mentoring. Delaporte outlined the differences between training and development. “Training is aimed at improving an employee’s current job performance. It focuses on acquiring specific skills or knowledge needed for immediate job tasks,” he said. “Development is more holistic, aiming to grow an individual’s overall career progression.” STRI Lights host Ariana Aubuchon asked Delaporte what “SRIOP” is. He said, “STRIOP, or the PEO STRI Orientation Program is an extension of the overall A3P program that has now been executed 3 times over the last couple of years.” The A3P Program stands for Acquisition Academy Apprentice Program, which is a recruitment, internship and comprehensive training program designed to mentor civilians to success in working with the United States Army. SkillBridge is a Defense Department (DOD) program for transitioning Service members. It offers employment training, internship, and apprenticeship opportunities at more than 3,000 public and private organizations across the country The program helps military personnel transition to civilian life by offering opportunities during their last 180 days of service. How the SkillBridge Program Works The Department of Defense (DOD) SkillBridge Program is an initiative designed to facilitate the transition of active duty service members into meaningful civilian careers. This program allows service members in their final 180 days of service to gain practical, hands-on experience with civilian companies through internships, apprenticeships, and specialized training programs. The SkillBridge program is structured around four key elements: 1️⃣ Duration: Eligible service members can participate in SkillBridge during the final 180 days of their active duty. During this time, they can work with a civilian employer for a period of three to six months, depending on the program’s setup. 2️⃣ Funding: The DOD pays for all service member salaries and benefits during their time in SkillBridge, allowing companies to host transitioning service members at no additional labor cost. 3️⃣ Eligibility Requirements: While most active duty service members are eligible for SkillBridge, they must receive approval from their command, meet criteria such as being within 180 days of separation, and have no pending disciplinary actions. 4️⃣ Application Process: Service members interested in SkillBridge typically begin by reviewing approved programs and submitting an application. Once they are accepted, they work closely with their command and their chosen company to finalize program details and establish a start date. Many businesses see the value in hiring veterans, but they often find it hard to connect with them due to their widespread locations and tight transition schedules.
