Open-air or indigenous fresh produce markets play a critical role in society. Most markets, which offer diverse goods and services, are located in urban areas. Farmers and produce traders use them to reach consumers, making them excellent platforms for rural-urban linkages. They can play an essential catalytic role in food production in rural areas and food security in urban areas. However, policymakers do not leverage such an important policy instrument. This month, we focus on a critical aspect of the agri-food system- the price formation of the three peppers: green, yellow and red. Our evaluation of their trading patterns in the three major markets of Eswatini in Manzini, Mbabane and Mahlanya is crucial for informing strategic planning in the agri-food sector.
