Various policy shortcomings are in place that could hamper the progression of safe and efficient sanitation for school-aged children. The School Colloquium addressed the concern surrounding these policies. A conclusion amongst stakeholders is that different policies surrounding education and sanitation need to have a component that specifically focuses on school sanitation. A stronger and robust political framework that sets a shared vision with firm rules and quality checks on implementation and maintenance of school sanitation systems and hygiene policies would greatly benefit the school sanitation landscape in South Africa. sastep.org.za #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology

📝 The 2018 School Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (SWASH) Assessment Survey Reports That: 👇 👉 6 Out of 10 schools (63.8%) in Tanzania had handwashing facilities. Urban schools (75.3%) were more likely to have handwashing facilities than rural schools (60.6%). 👉 Only about 17.6% of schools, as only approximately 2 out of 10 schools, had handwashing facilities with soap and water available at the time of the survey. 👉 Government-owned schools had fewer basic hygiene services (14.4%) than non-government institutions (39%). 👉 There were large regional differences in the availability of basic hygiene services in schools, with coverage ranging from 1.4% in Songwe to 47.2% in Kilimanjaro. 👉 Around 28% of schools had water but no soap, while over half (54.8%) had no hygiene services at all.

Water and Sanitation Hygiene ======================== Several approaches to solving the water and sanitation crisis in our communities have been developed, such as CHAST, CLTS, PHAST etc. Iam a "trainer of trainers" in PHAST and CLTS. I have trained several communities and implemented these WASH strategies in communities. Allow me to briefly explain these Programs starting with PHAST; Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) is a systematic participatory approach consisting of seven sequential steps that culminate in the development of an action plan for addressing the prevailing WASH problems in a given community. It employs Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and SARAR tools to elicit meaningful and equitable participation of all community members. TOO MANY COOKS SPOIL THE BROTH! The reality of this statement occurred to me when I went through the rabbit hole of continuous examination and exploring the WASH related laws in KPK over the last seven months under KPCIP.🕵️♂️💧 What I discovered was both eye-opening and concerning. There are numerous departments handling aspects of water and sanitation. And where hypothetically more departments should result in a better service delivery, the case was otherwise: a maze of legal lacuna and overlapping responsibilities. This overlap results not only in duplicated efforts but often leads to ineffective or no action at all. 🏢🔄 After much deliberation, I decided that the only way that this effort will matter is to engage YOU and present these insights in the most digestible format possible. 📊✨ My aim is to make this vital information accessible, interactive and actionable for all of you. 　 📌🚰How Accessible is Drinking Water in Schools in Tanzania? 👇 👉 Around 80% of Tanzanian schools had drinking water available during the survey, but only 66.6% had consistent access throughout the year. 👉 Urban schools were more likely to have water available (84.1%) than rural schools (79.3%). 👉 Secondary schools had better access to drinking water (86.3%) compared to primary schools (77.4%). 👉 Non-government schools outperformed government schools, with 90.9% of non-government schools having water, compared to 79% of government schools. 👉 This pattern continued, with non-government schools having more consistent water access (84.9%) than government schools (63.3%). 📊 2018 School Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Assessment | Main Report
