Durban having reached 100 toilets with Loowatt’s innovative sanitation technology is a milestone of success. This game changing sanitation solution showcased that South African communities value high-quality toilets and are willing to support them with user-paid sanitation options. These 100 toilets equal 350+ people having access to clean and safe sanitation; 60% of which are women and girls. 8 green jobs were created and 1700+ safely managed waste collections. A massive win for innovative sanitation in South Africa as we prepare to celebrate World Toilet Day. https://bit.ly/3VfnbYH #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology #NGSKnowledgeHub

🌍💧 Commemorating World Toilet Day 2024: Advancing Sanitation for a Healthier Kenya Today, on World Toilet Day, we are reminded of the critical role sanitation plays in improving public health, protecting our environment, and ensuring human dignity. This year's theme, “Toilets: A Place for Peace,” highlights how access to safe, dignified, and inclusive sanitation contributes to healthier and more harmonious communities. At Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA), we are committed to improving access to safe and sustainable sanitation services for all, particularly in underserved and vulnerable communities. From developing decentralized treatment facilities to restoring the Nairobi Rivers Basin, we are addressing the sanitation challenges that impact health, the environment, and livelihoods. 🔹 Why it Matters: 3.6 billion people globally lack access to safely managed sanitation services. Poor sanitation is a major contributor to water pollution and public health crises. 🔹 Our Contributions and ongoing efforts: 1️⃣ Expanding access to sanitation facilities through innovative and community-centered solutions. 2️⃣ Partnering with development partners, and private actors to scale impactful projects. 3️⃣ Incorporating climate resilience into our sanitation systems, ensuring sustainability for future generations. Together, we can ensure a healthier and more equitable future for everyone. #WorldToiletDay2024 #SanitationForAll #SustainableDevelopment #AWWDA #SDG6 #EnvironmentalHealth #ClimateResilience

World Toilet Day 2024: Toilets – A Place for Peace On 19 November 2024, Uganda joins the global community in commemorating World Toilet Day under the theme Toilets A Place for Peace. This United Nations Observance highlights the critical role of safe sanitation in building a healthier, fairer, and more peaceful world. Globally, 3.5 billion people lack safely managed sanitation, with 419 million still practising open defecation. This year’s campaign focuses on the threats to sanitation posed by conflict, climate change, disasters, and neglect. When sanitation systems fail, untreated waste pollutes the environment, spreading deadly diseases like cholera and endangering public health. Governments, stakeholders, and communities are urged to prioritize resilient and accessible sanitation services for everyone. Greater investment and stronger governance are vital to achieving ‘Safe Toilets for All by 2030,’ a key target of Sustainable Development Goal 6. As GrowthAid we implore everyone to take action to secure safe sanitation for all and create a future where toilets are truly places of peace. #WorldToiletDay2024

🌍🚻 World Toilet Day: Addressing WASH Challenges Amid Climate Change in Kenya 🌱🌊 On this World Toilet Day, we reflect on the urgent need for equitable access to sanitation and the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities. According to the recent Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report on WASH in Kenya, 41% of the population lacks basic sanitation services, and over 9.9 million people rely on contaminated water sources, exacerbating health risks. In informal settlements, where 60% of Nairobi's population lives, poor sanitation facilities, lack of sewer systems, and inadequate waste management have devastating consequences during extreme weather events. The recent flooding in Mathare and Mukuru left thousands displaced, further exposing residents to cholera outbreaks and other waterborne diseases. Climate Change: A Growing Threat Rising global temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns intensify these challenges. Floodwaters overwhelm already strained sanitation systems, spreading contamination and disease. The UPR report underscores the need for climate-resilient WASH infrastructure to safeguard communities against such crises. Call to Action On this day, we urge the government and stakeholders to: 1️⃣ Invest in WASH: Allocate at least 7% of the national budget to water and sanitation programs as recommended in the UPR report. 2️⃣ Build Climate-Resilient Infrastructure: Ensure flood-resistant toilets and sewer systems in informal settlements. 3️⃣ Empower Communities: Promote public participation in developing sustainable WASH solutions. 💧 Access to safe sanitation is a human right. Let’s work together to ensure no one is left behind, even in the face of climate change. In commemoration of the World Toilet Day 2024, I wrote about the urgent need to reform sanitation in motor parks and markets nation wide. In motor parks, from which millions of people travel, the absence of functioning restrooms makes the experience less enjoyable and even unhealthy. In markets, where tens of thousands of people shop and interact daily, the lack of toilets is not just a matter of convenience—it’s a matter of public health and dignity. Poor sanitation contributes to the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery, which are prevalent in many parts of Nigeria due to inadequate waste management systems. https://lnkd.in/d5Tqy8gN

It is World Toilet Day! World Toilet Day is an annual United Nations observance promoted through a worldwide public campaign that encourages action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. ‘Safe toilets for all by 2030’ is one of the targets of #Sustainable Development Goal 6 – but the world is seriously off track. 3.5 billion people still live without safely managed sanitation, including 419 million who practise open defecation. This year, the focus is on the fact that, for billions of people, sanitation is under threat from conflict, climate change, disasters and neglect. When sanitation services are destroyed, damaged or disrupted, untreated human waste spreads in the environment, unleashing deadly diseases such as cholera. By creating a barrier between us and our waste, sanitation services are essential for public and environmental health. The World Toilet Day 2024 campaign calls on governments to ensure that sanitation and water services are resilient, effective, accessible to everyone and shielded from harm. More investment and better governance of sanitation are critical for a fairer, more peaceful world. In celebration of the day, the Director of Environmental and Public Health, Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board [KNSPHCMB], Alhaji Sani Abdu Ungogo enjoined the Environmental Health Officers across the state to be proactive in discharging their duties and ensure the basic requirements of toilets in all premises are adhered to under the National policy guidelines on excreta and sewage management, 2005. He also called on them to sends monthly environmental health data on time for prompt analysis and evidence-based decision making. With additional text from unwater.org #health #water #toilet #WTD2024

It’s not just about speeding up; ensuring quality is paramount. While there’s considerable talk about accelerating the achievement of safely managed sanitation (SMS), SNV’s Antoinette Kome highlighted that the path to progress isn't straightforward. In the face of treatment plants breaking down and falling into disrepair, Kome emphasised that we must not focus solely on technological innovation. It’s crucial to involve a diverse range of stakeholders in sanitation decision-making processes. Further, we must address behaviours throughout the entire sanitation service value chain to make sustainable progress. ➡ For further info, read nine case studies on faecal sludge and waste management, highlighting why holistic approaches to the sanitation challenge is needed: on.snv.org/3KV5R6N A big thank you to the World Health Organization, UNICEF, WaterAid, and other development partners in Nepal for organising this much-needed forum! 🚽💡 #Sanitation #QualityOverSpeed #InclusiveDecisionMaking #SustainableDevelopment
