Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop announces the award of an archaeological investigations contract, to Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd - Red River Archaeology Group, to support the construction of the #A9 Dualling: Tay Crossing to Ballinluig project. The contract, worth almost £2 million, will involve investigations on several monuments including the Kindallachan Cairn. The work, alongside a number of other advance works packages, will play a key role in preparing for the main construction contract for the project, which is expected to be awarded in Summer 2025. 👻Buyer Beware ☠️ . -North Carolina lawmakers are moving to loosen development requirements that would allow...developers to build homes on a "highly significant archaeological site" the state says includes a Native American burial ground up to 3,000 years old. . -A recent archeological survey discovered the site has "no less than 11 potential human burial clusters," each containing multiple individuals as part of a Native American settlement spanning over multiple centuries between 1000 BCE – 1600 CE... . -The site...on the Bogue Sound near Emerald Isle, could also be eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places... . -The proposed legislation appears to cut some state agencies out of the development process and prevent regulators from blocking construction on the site — and potential sites in the future — due to archaeological concerns... . #realestate #ancient #history #deedsnotwords #continentalground

Its been several weeks since the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023 came into force. The archaeology sector has been very quiet, hopefully because organisations are all getting on with updating training/policies/risk assessments... What are people initial thoughts of the impact of such a move where for instance Norfolk and Planning, Heritage Planning, Archaeological Planning and many other questions.

The archaeological and historical records frequently do not match, which is why we have Historical Archaeology, in which the best work is done when coherence with documents is not assumed. My published Honours thesis identified mass discrepancies between burial records and reality in Melbourne General Cemetery, as did recent archaeological work at Central Station Sydney. This latest example drives home that historically as now, nothing is sacred or accountable when contracted works are carried out without inspection or audit. https://lnkd.in/gxtEwXxt

UK archaeology and volunteers - another side of the story It can be enlightening to volunteer on a professionally organised and led archaeological excavation, as a qualified, time-served, independent subject specialist. You may find yourself 'supervised' by a recently graduated, junior professional; he/she may be short on expertise, but rather good at archaeological bluffing (see Paul Bahn, 1989). Furthermore, you may discover you know more about the site and its archaeology than the excavation director. But hey! - no one listens to the opinions of a humble 'volunteer'! And you bite your tongue as the mistakes are made. As a 'volunteer' within a self-assured 'top-down' hierarchy, you will score no points for rocking-the-boat.

🎉 Delighted that our recent work to secure preservation in situ of archaeological remains has been used by Historic England as a case study for good practice for its recent revision of Preserving Archaeological Remains: Appendix 5 The Reburial of Archaeological Sites! 👏 Whilst working for ALIGN on HS2 (C1 North) Sarah Revans BSc PGCFA MCIfA MA co-ordinated the engineers and their designers to design an embankment over archaeological remains. 🏗️ The remains were found during the early works contract for HS2 and temporarily reburied whilst a long term solution for preservation in situ was agreed. The site at Hunt’s Green Farm contains evidence of an Iron Age boundary ditch called Grim’s Ditch, part of a larger monument that continues outside the site area. The ditch to the south-west of the reburial area is scheduled. Other scheduled and undesignated sections are located throughout Buckinghamshire. The area being preserved is not designated, because it was not known about before the HS2 excavations. Fabulous work Sarah! You can read the guidance through the 🔗 here: https://lnkd.in/gS5Wk7RA
