Looking after your mental health: Music This month I am posting a little differently, my aim is to raise awareness and explain how simple things, personal to me, can help to improve mental health. Music is a means of communication and supports language development for every stage of life. It is great for children to support with regulating emotions and the development of speech. For all adults, music can be an important coping strategy. I have found music especially important for people who are struggling with a mental health condition, receiving palliative care and finding life is tough or supporting someone with dementia. It remains an important part of my professional life when supporting people’s mental health in the therapeutic space. I have taught the importance of music for many years, when regulating emotions or releasing shut down emotions and I have enjoyed watching relationships flourish as a result of music. Upbeat music can lift your mood, and calm music can reduce anxiety. I love singing (privately and professionally), and I try to input music into my schedule every day. When I sing or listen to music, I can shut my world out and silence it; my internal world becomes calm and still. Music can be introduced easily into everyday life by playing your favourite artists. However, it is important to consider supporting your local theatre, choral society, local orchestra, to go to the opera or go to a concert as a means of de-stressing and social connection. How do music and the emotion of devotion affect our mental health? 🎶🙏🏻 Back in my childhood, the mornings often began with the soothing sounds of Marathi Bhaktigeete filling the house, creating a serene and positive start to the days. 🤍 I recently attended a program on Abhangwari. Immersed in the devotional atmosphere, I realized how deeply these emotions and music can impact our mind. My thoughts on how music and the emotion of devotion affect our mental health: 👇🏻 🎶 Devotional music connects us to our inner selves. It helps release pent-up emotions, making us feel more calm and centered. 🎶 Listening to devotional music helps us forget our stress and worries, bringing a unique sense of peace to our minds. 🎶 The positive messages in devotional music foster positive thoughts, making us feel happier and more inspired. 🗒 Research highlights: - A 2016 study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that listening to upbeat music can improve mood and boost happiness within just two weeks. - Another study in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine showed that devotional music, specifically, can significantly reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, due to its repetitive and soothing nature. What is your favorite devotional song or abhang, and how does it impact your mood or emotions? Let me know in the comments. #MindMitra #mentalhealth
