My Journey to Responsible Travel: Lessons Learned I'll be honest, like most people I used to think traveling was all about adventures, exploring new places and having fun. But recently, I realized the impact my actions had on the destinations I visited. Today i share my journey to responsible travel and encourage others to join me. As travelers, we have the power to make a lasting impact on our environment But do we truly consider our actions? I didn't, until I saw the devastating effects of over-tourism in Bali in Indonesia, Santorini in Greece, and Barcelona in Spain. What Does Responsible Travel Mean to Me? It's about respecting local cultures, environments, and communities. Being mindful of my actions and making choices that benefit the places I visit. Responsible Travel Matters: It helps to : Preserve local cultures and traditions - imagine losing the essence of a place! Support local economies - helping communities thrive. Protect the environment - preserving its beauty for future generations. Enhances traveler experiences - authenticity over commercialization. Below my 5 Lessons in Responsible Travel: 1. Research local customs and traditions - respect local ways. 2. Choose eco-friendly accommodations - reduce your carbon footprint. 3. Support local businesses - boost the local economy. 4. Learn key phrases in the local language - show respect. 5. Respect cultural sites and artifacts - preserve history. Ps Join the responsible travel movement! As #overtourism strains popular #destinations like Bali, Venice, and New York, Aotearoa New Zealand prepares to manage the impact ahead of its summer season. With plans to triple the international tourist tax, New Zealand aims to attract mindful travelers and protect its unique landscapes and cultures. The concept of "#slowtravel" offers a solution—encouraging travelers to slow down, stay longer, and engage deeply with local cultures. It’s about creating richer experiences, reducing congestion, and promoting sustainable tourism. By focusing on fewer, more meaningful experiences, travelers can foster genuine connections with their destinations while minimizing their environmental footprint. Embracing slow travel not only benefits the traveler but also preserves the integrity and beauty of the places they explore. 🏞️ https://lnkd.in/dGZRMV8v #ResponsibleTravel #SustainableTourism #MindfulTravel #ExploreNZ #SlowTravel

What do sustainable tourism and responsible travel mean to you? Sustainable tourism has become somewhat of a buzzword, but there isn't much context to what that actually means. To me, sustainable tourism means supporting local businesses and choosing sustainable-focused restaurants, tours, and hotels first. I also think part of sustainable tourism is not visiting places during the peak season to reduce the burden on the ecosystem and economy from over-tourism. The places that are feeling over-tourism the worst (think Venice, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Tulum, and countless others) don't have this issue year long. As travelers, we need to be open to visiting places during shoulder or off-season so as not to contribute to the bigger issue. We also need to be open to visiting NEW places. There are so many wonderful cities/countries/beaches to visit. We constantly promote these principles in our content, but I also think sustainable tourism needs to address its socioeconomic impact, especially with the rise of nomadism. People *us included* are traveling more often and staying in places longer. This is great for many areas, but also an annoyance for others. Popular digital nomad spots like Tulum, Bali, Mexico City, and many European cities are now overwhelmed with outsiders and impacting local's cost of living. When traveling for long periods digital nomads need to try to assimilate into the area as best as possible. While the bougie coffee shop 100% benefits from your dollars in the local economy, a street vendor or Taquero will benefit a lot too. Eat what locals eat, try to learn the language, don't add to the chaos of transportation, and don't interrupt the lives of locals for content creation. It's a delicate balance, but the balance is off-kilter favoring foreigners' dollars over locals' needs in many areas. And they need a rest. What are your thoughts on this? I'd love to hear from tourism boards and travel writers about what sustainable tourism means to you and how it plays into digital nomads and over-tourism. P.S. This post was inspired by Taylor Haught's recent Tulum post. #travelwriter #travelcreator #digitalnomad #tourism #responsibletourism #sustainbletourism

Luxury Wellness makes Body, Mind & Soul happier than ever
Senior Lecturer (Tourism and Wellness Business), Turku University of Applied Sciences. Start-up entrepeneur at Laavu.eu
Finland has been voted the happiest country in the world for the 7th time. This is often wondered about both in Finland and around the world. In our research article published in autumn 2023, Miia Grénman, Mervi Varhelahti and I asked Finnish well-being travellers what makes them happy. Three clear themes emerged: first, family, friends and pets; second, nature; and third, rest and relaxation. So Finnish happiness is based on very ordinary, almost mundane things that are within everyone's reach. #happiness #finland #wellbeing #tourism #worldshappiesnation Read more about our research https://lnkd.in/dYdeWj5K 😀

Spain's Tourism Landscape Evolves: Short-Term Rental Regulations in Valencia Cities across Spain are taking strategic steps to balance tourism with local housing needs, with Valencia being the latest to implement thoughtful regulations on short-term rental platforms like Airbnb. These new measures aim to: - Protect affordable housing for residents - Manage tourist density in historic neighborhoods - Promote more sustainable tourism practices For travelers, this means: - Potentially fewer rental options in prime areas - Opportunities to explore less-traversed city districts - More authentic and intentional travel experiences The shift represents a proactive approach to urban planning, demonstrating how destinations can thoughtfully manage tourism growth while preserving local community integrity. Travelers can adapt by: - Exploring alternative accommodations - Considering boutique hotels and regulated rentals - Engaging more deeply with local neighborhoods This evolution in travel reflects a broader commitment to responsible tourism—balancing visitor experiences with the needs of local communities. For those planning Spanish adventures, flexibility and an open mind will be key to discovering the rich, nuanced experiences these destinations offer beyond traditional tourist paths. #ResponsibleTravel #TourismInnovation #SpainTravel
