Protecting both Communities and the Oceans in Indonesia 🌊 Exciting news! 🌟 SEArcular by Greencore Resources Ltd and AXA have to teamed up to support Indonesia’s incredible waste pickers, the unsung heroes on the front lines of plastic pollution 🌍 Every day, waste pickers in Indonesia put themselves at risk to protect our environment, but often lack access to essential healthcare and safety protections. Now, with AXA’s micro-insurance and SEArcular’s commitment to safe, dignified working conditions, we're changing the game. Waste pickers now have access to basic healthcare and accident coverage, making it possible for them to work safely and with dignity. 🏥 Our involvement in Java Surabaya Searcular project is about more than recycling plastic, it’s about building a sustainable ecosystem that values people, protects families, and strengthens communities 👪 🔗 Read more about how we're transforming lives in our latest blog https://lnkd.in/gsAxTipm #PlasticCollective #SEArcular #AXAInsurance #PlasticPollution #SocialImpact #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #WasteManagement

I came across an interesting way how this Malaysian state is fighting with plastic pollution. Starting 2025, Selangor, a state in Malaysia, will take an ambitious step in its ongoing battle against plastic pollution. The state will expand its 'No Plastic Bag Day' campaign from just Saturdays to include Fridays and Sundays as well. This initiative, first launched in 2010, has already made an impact in reducing plastic waste, and now, the government is aiming for a larger, more systemic shift. The concept is simple but powerful: consumers are charged 20 cents for each plastic bag, with funds raised going toward environmental conservation and charity initiatives. The result? A noticeable decrease in plastic consumption and potential shift in the public’s perception of plastic bags as a disposable, take-for-granted product. Still, it’s going to take a long time to change our consumption habits from convenience to sustainability?

A key enabler of this will be a public-private partnership between Unilever the CEA and the MEPA to clean and step up the health of the Kelani River which provides drinking water to 4 million Sri Lankans. This was formalized through a MoU signed recently. Challenging perceptions: Danone Aqua responds to being named as top #plastic polluter In response to a recent river trash audit by Sungai Watch naming it as Indonesia’s largest plastic polluter, Danone Aqua argues that the study was not representative of the country’s #waste conditions due to selective sampling. The B-Corp certified company emphasised their efforts to manage post-consumer waste in #Indonesia and highlighted the need to pay attention to systemic barriers hindering #sustainability efforts, including poor #wasteinfrastructure and limited #recycled materials. Click the link below for our full interview with Danone Indonesia’s sustainability director Karyanto Wibowo where we further discuss the measures the organisation is taking to reduce its plastic footprint in Indonesia. #Water #Cities https://lnkd.in/dBeRhsNp

Another example of a good rule for #sustainability programs: no stories without numbers, and no numbers without stories. Sustainability efforts and certifications must be supported by layered #supplychain due diligence and assurance measures, upstream and downstream, to better capture full lifecycle impact and support claims. I am also heartened to see #extendedproducerresponsibility - assigning producers greater responsibility for products' end-of-life management, encouraging innovations in product design - gaining ground globally.
Awkward. Danone bottled water brand Aqua, a certified B Corp or "beneficial corporation", has just been identified as Indonesia's biggest plastic polluter by far. An audit of Indonesian rivers by Sungai Watch, an environmental NGO, found that 1 in every 4 PET bottles discarded into rivers across the archipelago are Aqua branded bottles. Danone Aqua has been awarded for its sustainability efforts, which have included a waste awareness campaign and the creation of Indonesia’s first bottle made entirely from recycled plastic. Aqua is currently working with recycling companies in Indonesia to improve waste collection efforts. Aqua was the first Indonesian company to be certified by B Lab, which rewards “beneficial corporations”, or B Corps, based on a rigorous assessment of their social and environmental credentials. B Lab has faced scrutiny in recent months for enabling polluters to greenwash. B Lab is currently investigating the B Corp status of media agencies owned by Havas, which recently won a contract to work for oil major Shell. In 2022, a group of B Corps pressured the organisation to toughen its standards when Nestlé-owned coffee company Nestlé Nespresso SA was certified. B Lab is currently reviewing its standards. #bcorporation #sustainability #plasticpollution #greenwashing

By no means is B Lab perfect. Neither is the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) or Science Based Targets initiative or even the GHG protocol as both the World Resources Institute and the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development get funding from the worst polluters in the world like Cargill and Shell but we need to be careful that we don't bash the ones who are trying. I wish we would have the perfect solution and then we all would live it but #sustainability is complex and constantly changing. My personal life is probably more sustainable than many others but by no means perfect. Our sustainability consultancy Grain Sustainability is a B Corp and we are not necessarily happy with every B Corp out there but I also do not envy the decisions that B Corp has to make in regards to who to work with to make progress and where to draw the line.

Despite all the efforts we try to make in Europe or North America, it's still in the countries most affected that we need to shift our focus to 👀 We still have miles to go on our journey with plastic on this planet, and hiding these environmental disasters out of sight, physically and digitally, is not the way to go (take a look at Chile's fast fashion dumping ground in the Atacama Desert 🌵). B Corps are an interesting example of how a "trend" might evolve too ♻️. Suddenly all the major corporations want to have this label for good conscience whatever the cost because this is what consumers look for in a brand! But are they really that clean? 🤔 #BCorp #Sustainability #ProductDesign #Innovation #FMCG

Started almost 2 decades ago, The B Corp ecosystem is once again under scrutiny. 😳 Sought-after certification B-Corp has faced various criticism over the years with critics saying 'how it is moving further away from its founding principles.' Resulting in some brands walking away from their certification e.g. Laude. Criticism includes: 1) Greenwashing 2) Relatively low bar 3) Lack of transparency 4) And a lack of enforcement I’m personally rather dubious whilst B-Corp has the likes of Danone and Nestle on their books. However, no one is perfect and should we instead be celebrating small wins and an eagerness to 'do better'. What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts. 🤔 For a tourism-based specialist and a rigorous certification you can trust I look to The Long Run. 🌍 Find a way, not an excuse! Indonesia is the 2nd largest producer of plastic waste in the world. Project Wings ,the German NGO acts against three of the world's biggest problems: species extinction, tropical deforestation and plastic pollution.♻️ Project Wings has set up a system whereby local residents collect and compress plastic waste in PET bottles to create Ecobricks. This method prevents plastic from breaking down into microplastics, protecting rainforests and rivers from contamination. These Ecobricks can be exchanged for a hot meal, creating an incentive to recycle. Once collected, they are used to construct sustainable buildings with no environmental impact. Through their approach, Project Wings is creating a self-sustaining, locally-run system that combines environmental protection, nature conservation and animal welfare. By 2027, Project Wings aims to create the world's largest recycling village🌳. 📍 Sumatra, Indonesia
