Is France #quantum ready? This question is important, especially on World Quantum Day! In Europe and France, the quantum ecosystem is thriving thanks to the groundbreaking work of top research centers. These hubs not only foster novel ideas but also cultivate the next generation of quantum pioneers, fueling the rise of cutting-edge startups. We're witnessing a remarkable deeptech renaissance across Europe, with talented entrepreneurs leading the charge in transformative fields like quantum computing. In 2020, France unveiled its visionary "France 2030" strategy to strengthen its innovation capabilities. This comprehensive plan earmarks €1B to fuel innovation and development in critical quantum-related domains such as quantum computing, sensing, and communication. Then, in 2023, the France Deeptech Association emerged as a pioneering initiative, uniting all the key players within the vibrant French deeptech ecosystem. The association aims to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and growth in cutting-edge technologies. However, transitioning from idea to enterprise poses unique challenges. However, when combined with the capability for mass production, low prices, low costs and commercial scalability, these innovations position themselves at the forefront of both markets. 💡 DeepTech’s Unique Edge: Government clients, especially in defense, are willing to take higher risks with long-term contracts, even tolerating failure. The tolerance for trial and error is significantly higher, providing deep-tech startups the runway to innovate without the immediate pressure of profitability. 💡 Navigating Limitations: By working closely with the defense sector, startups can understand from day one what technologies are permissible for commercial use and what is vital to national security - like the USA 🇺🇸 has defined- “small yard - high fence”. 🚀 Exciting Milestone for Ephos! 🚀 We're thrilled to announce that Ephos has raised $8.5M and opened the world’s first facility dedicated to the design and production of glass-based quantum photonic chips! Our proprietary technology will play a critical role in accelerating advancements in quantum computing, AI, and data centres. The seed round was led by Starlight Ventures, with participation from Collaborative Fund, Exor Ventures, 2100 Ventures, and Unruly Capital. Additionally, we are proudly supported by NATO DIANA and the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) in our mission to transform the future of computing. Today, to meet growing customer demand, we are opening a new fabrication facility in MIND Milano Innovation District, one of Europe’s most ambitious technology hubs. This plant will accelerate our mission to power quantum and classical infrastructure, more efficiently and securely. Our chips are built entirely in-house and our supply chain relies exclusively on US and EU suppliers. This funding round will also help us to expand our presence in the United States, scaling our team in San Francisco. In other words: we are hiring! Time to focus on Dual-Use tech! One of the unDavos Summit programs is 'Deep Tech', and on Tues morning we have a session dedicated to Space and Dual-Use Technologies. What is dual-use? (in case you have not come across the term) -> "At its core, dual-use technology refers to innovations that have both civilian and military applications." Source - a great paper at https://lnkd.in/eYHdCtwv So now we are looking for suggestions on: - which investors are focused and active in dual-use tech? - which scale-ups are getting lots of traction? - which corporates are active in the area? - which emerging startups are worth keeping an eye on? And also who are the thought leaders out there? And those with a situational understanding of the world in practice (Ukraine is key as it defends its terrority, with help from many allies). We are interested too in the big challenging topics to address -> and Davos is the place for these quiet, deep conversations, in session, then in the corridors and coffee bars. A huge thanks to Andriy Kolodyuk for taking the lead on organizing the panel, and to Joe Landon and Michelle Del Valle for working on this, and the Space topic too. It is fascinating digging into dual-use tech. The lovely thing about Davos during World Economic Forum week is that you have the space to have conversations, deep ones, on topics like... space. And dual-use tech (military tech + civilian use, fyi). We are working on a new panel for this - and will be looking for speakers, sponsors, etc. But ideally just a panel is kinda boring... so ideally we are trying to make use of 'Davos as the Business Platform' and drive action over a year, not just in a 45-min Tues morning session ;) Thanks to Giannis Tambakis and Zoé Le Pluart for helping unDavos Summit find cool stories and companies to bring to the week!
