The façade of this 1970s apartment building in Lahti, Finland had seen better days - it was time for a refresh. ✨ Instead of making extensive reparations to existing concrete balustrade structures, the housing association decided to brighten up the façade by swapping old and unfunctioning glazing to Lumon balcony glazing paired with blinds, as well as replacing the old concrete railing with a colorful Lumon balustrade. The board of directors had two criteria for the renovation project: durable, functional balcony glazing paired with blinds. "When the specs are defined like this, Lumon is often the final choice as a partner," explains Kristian Koskenniemi, Project Manager at Erigo Plan Oy. Façade renovation with the addition of glazing is a sustainable and efficient way to bring old buildings back to life. Views from Valckensteyn: Where sustainability meets affordability. We're proud to collaborate with like-minded partners, Woonstad Rotterdam and Waal, to design and build this mass-timber social housing gallery flat that boasts lower CO2 emissions and faster construction times. The apartments on the western facade include exceptionally wide balconies, while the lower storeys feature floor-to-ceiling windows. Around 85% of the building consists of timber elements, reinforced by a concrete elevator core. We transitioned from modernist concrete slabs to circular wooden slabs. Valckensteyn's design is reminiscent of post-war reconstruction buildings. The structure is built from factory-fabricated cross-laminated timber modules set on a plinth clad in travertine. These modules are assembled without glue, allowing the building to be demounted rather than demolished at the end of its life. Let's throw back to a project reference we've completed in 2019! We're excited to present Upcycle Studio, a pioneering development that stands as the world’s first commercially scaled circular housing project. Located in Ørestaden, Copenhagen, this innovative project consists of 20 terraced houses designed to push the boundaries of sustainable architecture. This project, led by the Lendager Group in collaboration with building owner Nrep and contractor AG Gruppen achieved impressive environmental results. In line with its circular economy principles, Upcycle Studios incorporated 75% of its windows from public housing in North Jutland, used 1,000 tonnes of concrete waste from the Copenhagen Metro, and built floors, walls, and facades with upcycled wood offcuts from Dinesen. What a:gain [again] delivered? We delivered a pre-development mock-up project delivery of Viddø in which we encountered the issues with using demolition facade glass for new facades. Instead, today we use demolition facade glass to make our interior glass partition walls, Tystø, where our Viddø is made from discarded pre-consumer industrial glass. This groundbreaking project showcases the potential of circular design and responsible building practices. 🌱🏠 #CircularEconomy #UpcycleStudios #SustainableArchitecture

Its Fantastic to be able to finally share the vision for Nolans Public House, a project that's close to our hearts and buzzing with potential - the transformation of a key corner site in Nine Elms into a beacon of community and environmental sustainability. Led by Stefan Shaw Studio, the project reimagines what the site at Nolan's Public House could be (and should remain) for the community. Contrary to the trend of replacing public spaces, we're taking a stand to preserve Nolan's Public House at the heart of our design. It's more than a pub; it's a community treasure, a place of connection and cherished memories. Along with our client – the Nolan Group we're committed to keeping it that way. Proposals submitted this February with a team including Quod ICINI PROJECTS LIMITED Knapp Hicks & Partners, Ltd CHP Surveyors Ltd and Tetra Tech amongst others, is a bold step forward. We're transforming the existing public house into a welcoming, vibrant mixed-use hub that's all about sustainability, community, and innovation. A place where contemporary design meets environmental consciousness, featuring: · A ground-floor pub that retains its traditional charm while embracing the future – (Dart boards and pool tables included!) · Sustainable construction techniques, including prefabricated lightweight steel framing, to minimize waste and disruption. · Communal roof gardens that offer a green oasis in the urban landscape. · Ample bicycle parking, catering to our eco-conscious community and those commuting from the new Nine Elms Station. We're not just building structures; we're crafting experiences, memories, and a sustainable future for Nine Elms with a community-focused development that keeps the pub right where it should be – at the heart of the community! #NolansPublicHouse #NineElms #CommunityDevelopment #SustainableDesign #UrbanRevival #StefanShawStudio #RIBA #MixedUse #MixedUseArchitects #MixedUseArchitecture #MixedUseCommunity #Sustainability #SustainableDesign #ResponsibleDesign #Residential #Publichouse #pub #TransportationHub #Placemaking #architects #Architecture #Masterplanners #Designers #Nineelms #London #Nolans

Space House London takes centre stage on the cover of Concrete Quarterly (The Concrete Centre). In the featured article, journalist Nick Jones explores how Seaforth alongside Squire and Partners has given this landmark a new lease on life by cleverly repurposing and extending its innovative hybrid structure and precast cladding. The modernisation reveals the stunning "bicycle wheel" concrete ceilings, enhanced natural and mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning, and transforms outdated spaces, such as parking levels, into vibrant, multi-purpose lifestyle spaces including London’s highest ratio of bike parking and shower facilities per square foot of building. Remarkably, Pell Frischmann calculated that the remodelling of Space House has reused 16,500m3 of concrete, equivalent to approximately 10,000 tonnes of embodied carbon. The new structure's embodied carbon is impressively low, comfortably meeting the LETI 2030 target. Atelier Ten's evaluation indicates that the building's operational carbon has been significantly lowered when measured against a standard regulation-compliant building. To uncover the full story of how Space House exemplifies the power of creative thinking and respect for architectural heritage in reimagining existing buildings for a greener, more innovative future, read the full article in Concrete Quarterly — https://lnkd.in/eWgA_uP5 #concretequarterly #sustainablearchitecture #retrofit #innovativedesign #greenbuilding #adaptivereeuse

Elevating quality and fire safety in residential buildings Find out how Promat SYSTEMGLAS® enables light transmission to be maximised without compromising fire safety in the lift shafts, enclosures and lobbies of residential buildings in our latest article. Lifts have become an essential feature for multi-storey residential buildings over recent decades as the importance of maximising accessibility is increasingly prioritised in building design. In apartment buildings designed around a central atrium, lifts can become an attractive design feature by using glass walls for the car itself and on the lift shaft. However, they need to be designed in a way that balances the aesthetic and light transmission benefits with fire safety. Depending on the fire strategy for the building, it may be beneficial to ensure the lift shaft offers a certified period of resistance to the spread of fire, such as 30, 60 or 120 minutes, which can be achieved using Promat SYSTEMGLAS® as one project in Prague illustrates.
