The results are in: The Labour Party will form the next Government with Keir Starmer as the UK Prime Minister. We’re calling on the new Government to confirm that they will be working to improve farmed animal welfare. These are some of the key areas we want to see action on: BAN CAGES: Around 8 million farmed animals are confined in cages each year in the UK. The previous Government said they’d prepared consultations on this issue, and we want to see them published. METHOD OF PRODUCTION FOOD LABELLING: To tell the truth about factory farming and help shoppers make informed choices. A consultation on labelling was carried out this year. Now we want to see the results, so mandatory animal welfare labelling can be introduced. #HonestLabelling PROTECT ANIMAL WELFARE IN TRADE DEALS: We shouldn’t import food produced in ways that are illegal in the UK. Not only does this support cruelty overseas it undercuts UK farmers. SUPPORT NATURE FRIENDLY FARMING: 70% of UK land is dedicated to farming and the number of factory farms is on the rise. Labor's live sheep export ban means global animal welfare standards will remain 'incredibly poor', peak farming body warns Australian farmers have hit out at Labor's live sheep export ban, saying the policy "makes absolutely no sense" if the government is "really true to its word". The Albanese Government’s decision to phase out live sheep exports will mean global animal welfare in many countries "will continue to be incredibly poor" as there is no longer a benchmark of basic standards to follow, Australia's peak farming federation has warned. Federal Agriculture Minister Murray Watt on Saturday announced the government will end the trade from May 1, 2028, as he unveiled a $107 million transition support package to help the industry navigate the phaseout. The RAF standard envisages the issuing of a third-party certification guaranteeing that wool, mohair or alpaca comes from responsibly managed farms, in compliance with stringent criteria for animal welfare and the reduction of environmental impact, and ensures traceability throughout the entire production process. The certification covers the entire production chain from livestock farms to textile manufacturing. #RMS, an acronym which can be translated to Responsible Mohair Standard, is a global certification and quality assurance system that is used in the Mohair Industry aimed at ensuring sustainable production of Mohair. Simply put, this standard seeks to employ efficient animal welfare, land management and eco-friendly practices in the #Mohair production value chain such that improved economic returns are realized. However, local communal farmers seldom benefit from the standards rewarding returns because: 1. Lack of training about the standard. 2. Government official (Extension Advisor) : Farmer Ratio. 3. Lack of specialization within the Mohair Industry. However, through government-private extension services interventions on RMS alot can be achieved (sustainability, profitability and traceability within the Mohair Industry value chain).

Great to see Provenir continue to grow and provide access to processing that is becoming increasingly more difficult to access in regional Australia. With the focus on supermarkets the govt should also look at the supply chain and the consolidation by overseas corporations and the loss of infrastructure as processing works are bought and closed or bought and access removed for farmers. Models like Provenir and other on farm processing initiatives gives access and options for farmers to gain control of the supply chain post farm gate.
