Researchers publish dataset of over 6,000 policies from all over the world In the intricate tapestry of global agriculture, sustainability threads its way through economic development and environmental conservation. Through a comprehensive database spanning over six decades and 200 nations, researchers illuminate the nexus between a country's prosperity and its commitment to eco-friendly agricultural policies. From soil erosion battles to income-driven policy dynamics, data-driven insights cultivate a greener future. https://buff.ly/49opca8 via @rheinische-friedrich-wilhelms-universität-bonn #environment #agriculture #sustainability #policy #future Image: The chart shows the number of national agri-environmental policies in each country. – It can be seen that there are a particularly large number of agri-environmental policies in the EU member states. I'm excited to share that I've achieved accreditation as a Registered Soil Practitioner - Soil Management from Soil Science Australia! This recognition underscores my expertise and dedication to advancing sustainable soil practices. Moving forward, I am enthusiastic about utilising this knowledge to tackle critical environmental issues like soil degradation and climate change. My focus will be on initiatives that improve soil health, promote sustainable agriculture, and champion best practices in soil management. #SoilManagement #SustainableAgriculture #EnvironmentalSustainability

#Climatechange solutions are not universal therefore one size fits all approach to environmental stressors is not effective. Our Sustainable Agriculture and Environment programmes continue to evolve using targeted #climatechange adaption approach delivering needs and impact where it’s needed most in each community. #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateResilience

The European Commission is prepared to ease environmental requirements in the Common Agricultural Policy, providing Member States with more leeway to define sustainable farming practices and making some of the obligations voluntary. This dangerous move would remove biodiversity and soil protections, and practices that help reduce dependency on pesticides. This plan goes against all available science and the long-term interests of society, healthy food systems and farmers. Hundreds of billions of public money will be channelled towards unsustainable agriculture practices. Our research clearly highlights that sustainability and resilience go hand in hand. For more evidence see: 1️⃣ Our work on nature restoration and food system resilience and opportunities for farmers and land managers 👇 ✔https://lnkd.in/dt2bp5ef ✔ https://lnkd.in/eDV24q7T 2️⃣ Review of the impacts of environmental degradation (climate change, biodiversity loss and soil erosion) on EU food production 👇 https://lnkd.in/eR_f3tHc 3️⃣ Our CAP post-2024 vision, shows that a different political agenda that sets a long-term vision and reforms the CAP’s governance is needed 👇 https://lnkd.in/esaAGcnV Harriet Bradley #CommonAgriculturePolicy #SustainableFood #Biodiversity #SustainableAgriculture #NatureRestoration #FoodResilience #soilhealth

Soil health forms the foundation for sustainable agrifood systems by enhancing productivity, resilience, and ecosystem services. Integrating soil health into the Rio Conventions aligns agriculture with climate, biodiversity, and desertification goals, ensuring global sustainability and food security. Sharing with you our issue brief for UNCCD COP16 | Number 1 titled: Soil health-The bedrock for integrating agrifood systems into the Rio conventions. https://lnkd.in/dhmiii36

Environmental impacts of continuous cropping in agriculture can be profound and multifaceted, affecting soil health, biodiversity, water quality, and greenhouse gas emissions. Continuous cropping, or growing the same crop on the same land year after year, has become a common practice to maximize yields and profits. #GeneralAgriculture

❗Important and alarming report 🚩The 2024 State of Soils in Europe report shows that European soils are increasingly unhealthy. Soil pollution in Europe arises from a variety of sources and activities that release contaminants such as #heavymetals, #pesticides and industrial chemicals. 🚩The report says that despite efforts to address #soil pollution, comprehensive assessments remain limited. Indicators such as the presence of #heavymetals and #pesticides suggest concerning trends. 🚩Soil pollution has far-reaching consequences, affecting not only human health but also ecosystem services and agricultural productivity. ✅To address these challenges, efforts are needed to fill knowledge gaps, establish harmonised monitoring practices and implement effective pollution prevention measures. World Soil Day 2024 🌍🌱 Fera is supporting the United Nations in their campaign to raise awareness on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. Despite its critical importance, soil health often receives insufficient attention due to a general lack of understanding, compounded by the fact that grass and crops usually thrive regardless. Soil health not only effects agricultural productivity but also has broader implications for ecosystem services, water quality, and carbon sequestration. Read more below about how our scientists are using their expertise to analyse the breadth and quantity of different nematode species present in soil samples to provide a bioindicator of soil health, and to help farmers understand the impact of management practices have on soil ecosystem here: https://hubs.ly/Q02-HLyG0 #WorldSoilDay #SoilHealth #Sustainability #Nematodes
