I'm looking forward to our presentation at #OPPIConference2024 this Thursday (26th) at 11am on "The Great Divide". Yessenia Revilla and I will discuss the difficulty of reconnecting our communities (or creating new communities) that have been disconnected by the development of a highway. Here's a synopsis of the session: __________ The Great Divide: Planning a Complete Community Divided by a Highway Some Cities across North America are transforming their urban landscape once divided by highways, by building connections to reconnect communities. Other cities are assessing how to build new communities alongside a new highway. Planning for a Complete Community is not always an easy task. Applying this lens on an established, legacy community can be very difficult. Now add a highway through that community. In the U.S. and Canada, during the 1940s, 1950s and 1970s highways were built that carved through vibrant neighborhoods, causing displacement, disconnection, and social and economic loss. However, in the last number of years, many movements have emerged from community organizers and local leaders to reimagine and reconnect these communities where people are being put first. As the U.S. makes historic investment in infrastructure, in response to these movements, providing funding to reconnect communities by recognizing mistakes from the past, we have the opportunity to build the future our communities deserve. This session will examine various cases where this has occurred, with a more detailed examination on Reconnecting Jackson Ward in Richmond, Virginia, and Highway 413, Heritage Heights, Brampton.

What do ‘good’ new communities look like? And, more importantly, how can we work together to deliver them? Last month, in the midst of Budget speculation and progress from government on its plans for a ‘generation of new towns’, Stantec assembled a roundtable of leading voices and decision-makers to address these questions. We welcomed UK Chief Planner Joanna Averley and Chris Curtis, MP for Milton Keynes North, as well as figures from across investment, housebuilding, development, and advisory sectors, and local authorities. What we established was the importance of delivering not just the housing numbers, but also the quality of place we all aspire to. Communities which embed social infrastructure, connectivity, green space, character, wellbeing and a sense of place. Get Britain building - a word on community engagement for property development in the context of the new Government.   With the post-General Election dust now starting to settle, sort of (seven-MP suspension anyone?)…and a couple of weeks having passed since Rachel Reeves’ first speech, Tuesday saw the first meeting of the Chancellor’s new Growth Mission Board. GB Energy will be announced today too and it’s going to be a very interesting few months and years as we see to what extent the latest "get Britain building again" promise will be realised, and to what degree of success.   The positive statements and tough talk are welcome, relatively speaking, and we know that as measures start/continue to be put into action there will be the inevitable clashes with Local Authorities and communities affected.   We’ve been discussing this at the agency, and feel it means the emphasis on community engagement in planning has never been stronger. Local people simply must be part of the conversation, for and against development plans in their area, because even those in strong opposition may now be feeling that total objection is going to be fruitless. And rather than going to even greater lengths to oppose development proposals, we may actually see these groups begin to engage more productively, in turn becoming a valuable voice in helping shape plans in their area.   A better the devil you know type scenario!   Developers, you can benefit from this. He rightly points out that as new measures begin to take effect, there will undoubtedly be clashes with Local Authorities and affected communities.
