2nd October 2014-2024 This Gandhi Jayanti, the 2nd October, we complete a decade of this mission in India. A time to take stock. First and foremost, that was the first time, we accepted that there is a need to improve upon cleanliness and hygiene. After the euphoria of initial years, where every celebrity could be seen with a broom, deeper meaning of Swachh Bharat Mission unfolded. It is not only about clean streets, there is a lot more to it. Creation of public toilets, solid waste disposal systems, toilets at rural homes and so on. A lot has happened but a lot more has to be done. Creating awareness and sensitivity in one and all still remains a challenge in a country of 1.4 billion. The cities which emerged winners in Swachh Bharat were the cities which could create a sense of pride in citizens, in turn improving civic sense. I had seen that happening in Indore. This sense of pride is infectious and Surat, Navi Mumbai also caught up.
