Reducing household waste is a practical and eco-friendly way to contribute to a healthier environment. Here are some effective tips to help you minimize waste at home: 1, Compost Organic Waste: Set up a compost bin for kitchen scraps and yard waste. Composting reduces landfill waste and creates nutrient-rich soil for your garden. 2. Recycle Responsibly: Familiarize yourself with your local recycling guidelines. Separate recyclables like paper, glass, and plastic from your regular trash to ensure they are processed correctly. 3. Buy in Bulk: Purchase items in bulk to reduce packaging waste. Use reusable containers for storage. 4. Use Reusable Bags: Bring your own bags when shopping. This simple habit significantly cuts down on plastic waste. 5. Choose Refillable Products: Opt for products that can be refilled, such as cleaning supplies and personal care items. This reduces the need for single-use packaging. 6. Repair, Don’t Replace: Before discarding broken items, consider repairing them. This applies to electronics, clothing, and household goods. 7. Donate Unwanted Items: Give items you no longer need a second life by donating them to charities or thrift stores. 8. Plan Your Meals: Reduce food waste by planning your meals and buying only what you need. Store food properly to extend its shelf life. Reducing waste not only benefits the environment but can also positively impact your homeowner’s insurance. By maintaining a clean and well-organized home, you can reduce risks like fire hazards and pest infestations. A well-kept home often translates to fewer claims and can help you secure better rates and terms on your insurance policy. Polystyrene foam containers may still be on the market, but these single-use items have a negative long term environmental impact. They never truly decompose and are often a prevalent item in beach pollution. According to Colgate University, there are currently enough polystyrene foam “cups produced every day to circle the earth if lined up end to end”. Cut down on your restaurant’s environmental impact by cutting out polystyrene foam. Replace polystyrene foam with reusables or work with the Green Restaurant Association to procure more sustainable disposables. Did you ever think about where that compostable take-out container your customer takes home goes? Are you in one of the majority of cities or towns without curbside composting? Your customers likely had to put their food and “compostable” containers in the garbage. Once it's in an airtight landfill, the value of it being compostable ceases, as it cannot compost in the landfill. If you're in a closed loop system where composting receptacles are easily accessible across a wide area, such as a college campus or airport, compostables can realize their full potential. However, most people will take compostables home to the trash. The next time you get a compostable, think about where it's ending up. The Green Restaurant Association can help you determine what the best disposable option is for your restaurant. While compostables may be great in very specific applications, disposables made from post-consumer recycled content are often better in others. Contact us today to find out what the best disposable option is for your restaurant. The Early May Bank Holiday is nearly here! We’d like to say a big thank you to our people working to keep our sites running over the bank holiday weekend. There's no better way to boost your mental health than by spending time in your garden or an outdoor space. Why not do your part for the environment at the same time by making sure to reuse or recycle and turn your waste into wonderful wildflowers, fruit and veg? ✔ Turn your organic and food waste into high-grade compost and fertilizer at home. Another win - you'll prevent waste going to landfill or having to be recycled. Most importantly, it means no more plastic bags used for store-bought compost. ✔ Reuse carton packaging such as egg cartons to sprout your seedlings. ✔ Recycle plastic bottles – they can be used as planters, automatic watering stations, or even traps for gardens pests. #GrowYourOwn #Reuse #Recycle #Reduce #BankHoliday #Mental Health

Is food waste a problem in your company too? Here are three ways to manage it. But before you manage it, assess the frequency of wastage, your storage solutions, and waste disposal. Once you know how much food waste your company generates, you can manage it. 1. Talk about food waste to your employees Start with sharing the problem and your vision. Discuss waste reduction strategies with them and express your expectations. 2. Set up composting bins Keep clearly labelled bins for organic waste. Inform your employees what it's for, so they can easily throw away their wet waste. 3. Join forces with local charities or food banks If you'd like a simple, straightforward solution, this is it. Collaborate with local groups to share food with those in need. Bonus tip - Use reusable cutlery instead of single-use ones. If you want to create an end-to-end waste management strategy for your office, we can help.

University of South Carolina has four Certified Green Restaurants® on its campus in Columbia, SC! Certified Green Restaurants® Honey Comb Cafe, Chick-fil-A, Global Cafe, and Fresh Greenes have collectively taken more than 105 environmental steps to earn over 530 GreenPoints™. These restaurants decrease their waste by up to 90% every year through composting pre-consumer food waste and recycling plastic, glass, aluminum, cardboard, and paper. All four locations are also saving energy with a wall-mounted exhaust hood that captures more smoke and grease while using less energy than a free standing hood.
