Avoidance costs us lives, cripples lives, and affects the world touched by our lives. This is a battle GCON has taken on. Our presence is proof. Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. This year, the World Health Organization wants to raise more awareness about the connection between #mentalhealth and work. Some facts: ✅ Approximately 60% of the global population is working. ✅ As employees, we spend most of our day among our colleagues, clients, and supervisors. A safe and healthy work environment is therefore a protective factor for one’s mental health. Moreover, work supports good mental health by providing: ✅ a sense of #confidence ✅ the setting and achieving of goals ✅ #positive interpersonal relationships and belonging to a #community ✅ a daily routine and structure It is important to support people, also in the context of work. Conversely, unhealthy work conditions, including stigma, discrimination, and exposure to risks such as harassment, can significantly jeopardize mental health, affecting overall quality of life and, as a result, work participation and productivity. There’s plenty of theories on where the suicide stigma started… religion… law… language… Perhaps, it started with how hard it is to comprehend suicide. Perhaps, it’s hard to believe that someone wants to die when everything you do is centred on ‘living’. Perhaps, it’s too heartbreaking to consider that our loved ones are in so much pain, that we are not enough for them to want to live. Perhaps, it’s easier to write this complexity off as sin or insanity. And perhaps, this complexity manifested itself in religion, law, and language, perpetuating the problem. If so, does the solution for removing stigma sit in our ability to empathise with those suffering? And if so, does the responsibility rest with the people who’ve suffered, to tell their stories? I think so but I don’t know. Hopefully we get closer to the solution on November 20!
