60% Of people in #Uganda rank basic needs like healthcare, education, food, and water as their top priorities over political freedoms and women's rights (22%) - These findings come from Poll 2 of our ongoing #HumanRights campaign. The results of the poll beg the question: Are people who are faced with poverty in their communities more concerned with their basic needs and therefore less concerned with political and women's rights? Are international advocacy groups promoting inclusive, political and gender rights mis-aligned with the day-to-day realities and priorities of average Ugandan citizens? There is even disagreement about human rights issues among foreign advocacy groups working in Uganda. For example, there is a big debate about whether people should have easy access to contraceptives and abortion services. Some international groups that support progressive ideas argue that access should be increased, while other conservative groups from abroad are against it. This leaves many Ugandans feeling confused and left out of a debate that has both sides being argued by outsiders. #AfricanFutures: Did you know? 🔴 In Kenya, 3 out of 4 girls experience female genital mutilation (FGM) before the age of 14, according to UNICEF (based on data from the annual report for 2021). The emancipation of women & girls everywhere is of vital importance. Practices such as FGM are not aligned with feminism. In fact, FGM today is recognised as a practice that violates a number of international human rights laws❗ That is why Kenya 🇰🇪 has taken such a tough stance against it. The East African country has some of the most progressive legislation around the harmful practice. It has made 12 commitments to end all forms of GBV and FGM by 2026 👏. The fight for justice and equality must extend to every corner of our world, including the protection and rights of Indigenous women and girls. They face unique challenges, as discrimination and violence continue to jeopardise their access to land and resources vital for their well-being and survival. Indigenous women and girls often bear the brunt of systemic injustices, which can undermine their right to live free from fear and to benefit from the land that has been their home for generations. It is our responsibility to ensure they receive the protection and support they deserve. Women Impacting Nigeria (WIN) is committed to amplifying the voices of Indigenous women and advocating for their safety and equal rights. This means confronting the violence they face, advocating for their right to land, and standing with them in their fight for justice and respect. Let’s unite to protect the dignity of every Indigenous woman and girl. Together, we can work towards a world where they have the freedom and opportunities to thrive, unhindered by discrimination and violence. #WomenImpactingNigeria #WIN #NGO #FightForEqualityAndJustice #DignityForAllWomen

📢 Statement by Coalition for Peace and Gender Champions in Solidarity with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) The Coalition for Peace and Gender Champions joins the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) in expressing grave concern over the alarming reports of abductions and enforced disappearances in Kenya, affecting as many as 29 individuals since June 2024. We commend the ACHPR’s clear reminder that enforced disappearances violate fundamental human rights under the African Charter, including the right to liberty, dignity, and due process. As a grassroots organization committed to human rights and justice, we echo the ACHPR’s call to action and urge the Kenyan Government to: Conduct immediate, transparent investigations and ensure perpetrators are held accountable. Strengthen the independence and capacity of oversight bodies to prevent and address such violations. Support the families of victims by ensuring access to justice and remedies. Guarantee that all detained individuals are treated in compliance with due process of the law and uphold institutional reforms to safeguard human rights. We stand in solidarity with the families of the disappeared and all those advocating for justice and accountability. These acts undermine the rule of law and erode public trust, and they have no place in a democratic society. Let us collectively demand action to end this crisis and ensure Kenya remains a nation where human rights are respected and protected for all. #EndEnforcedDisappearances #HumanRights #JusticeForAll #ACHPR #AccountabilityNow #Kenya #EndAbductionsKE #EndAbductions #WakoWapi #HakiYetu CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Uganda AfricanDefenders (Pan-African Human Rights Defenders Network) African Initiative of Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRD Initiative) Southern Africa Human Rights Defenders Network Physicians for Human Rights Anti-Slavery International FEMNET - African Women's Development and Communication Network Gender Is My Agenda Campaign - GIMAC Network Wayamo Foundation Paul Mulindwa (PhD) https://lnkd.in/d6KiNfTP

In case you missed this!! Zimbabwe Women Against Corruption Trust recently launched a research report on the gendered impact of land corruption and displacements on women's access to socio-economic rights in Zimbabwe. ZWACT later engaged with Parliament to share the findings, position paper and recommendations. As part of our Advocacy Strategy, we don't only identify a problem but we identify allies who have the power to influence the change we want to see. #Towards a #genderresponsive and #transparent land administration in Zimbabwe. Gender responsiveness allows us to go beyond recognising the problem but also actively taking action and engaging policy makers to address the gender disparities. #landrights #genderequality

"It's hell out there" In May 2023, a historically strict anti-gay law came into effect in Uganda. This drastically changed the lives of many lgbtqi-people in the country, who have either had to flee there or risk facing oppression and persecution at home. Thanks to Clifford at LGBQI Voices Uganda, who was willing to share his knowledge and experiences in relation to the law, I wrote the first article about the law for Föreningen för utvecklingsfrågor (FUF). At that time, it was not so hard to find other news articles about it. Months have passed since then, and today, the sight of media reporting about the situation for the lgbti-community in Uganda is rare. This does not mean that is has improved. Quite the contrary. In this follow-up-piece I had the opportunity to listen to John and Rebecca, who are part of the Ugandan lgtbqi community. One still in Uganda, the other in Canada. We talked about how their lives have changed since May 2023 and the stories they told are heartbreaking. Really. It was an honour talking to Rebecca and John, and I commend their bravery for sharing their stories so open heartedly. We can not stop reporting about this. We can not stop standing up against this. To quote Rebecca: - I call on those who can do anything to restore sanity in Uganda to come forward. #LoveIsNotACrime #lgtbqirights #humanrights #Uganda You can find the article in English and Swedish here (the English translation is programme generated and might include some errors): https://lnkd.in/dUayCReN
