NEWS: University of New Mexico Opens College of Nursing and Public Health Excellence Building -- The University of New Mexico opened the $43.2 million College of Nursing and Public Health Excellence (CON-PHE) building in Albuquerque in October of 2024. Designed by Dekker in association with RDG Planning & Design, the 93,000-sf structure consolidates activities previously dispersed in 10 separate locations, while also providing critical space for expansion. Flexible teaching labs and classrooms are equipped with innovative technologies to support interactive learning, training, and exploration. Facilities for the College of Nursing include a 450-sf clinical research lab with integrated room partitions for patient observation, as well as a collaborative research environment with high-speed data capabilities. Leveraging abundant glazing to put science on display, a 3,020-sf wet lab on the second story offers advanced instrumentation for biomedical discovery. The College of Population Health occupies approximately half of the first floor. Enterprise Builders broke ground in August of 2022 on the sustainable development, which is slated to attain LEED Silver certification. https://lnkd.in/dMRuKsDa #HigherEducation #AcademicMedical #AlliedHealth #InterdisciplinaryResearch #Collaboration #LaboratoryTeaching #LaboratoryWet #EducationClassroom #EducationFacultyOffice #Sustainability

🦷😁Maine’s public universities are partnering in new ways to increase Maine’s healthcare workforce and decrease health disparities. And the latest multi-university collaboration is something to smile about. This week, University of Maine System (UMS) Trustees gave preliminary approval for the University of Maine at Presque Isle to construct an on-campus dental lab so the University of Maine at Augusta can offer dental assisting and expanded functions dental assisting (EFDA) programs there starting in 2026 and oral health services in central Aroostook County in 2027. The renovation of existing space in Wieden Hall and equipment will be funded by $750,000 in one-time Congressionally Directed Spending secured by U.S. Senator Susan Collins, vice chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Senator Angus S. King, Jr. on behalf of the System and a $1.05 million commitment from UMPI. “Having a County-based allied dental education program will go a long way toward ensuring area residents will be able to access the needed services close to home, especially lower-income households who altogether too often go without regular oral health care," said Aroostook County Action Program Executive Director/CEO Jason Parent. An interesting article explains #social_accountability and its different aspects. The University of California, Riverside (UCR) School of Medicine in the USA was established to address significant health challenges in Inland Southern California, including a severe physician shortage and poor health outcomes. It is designed with unique social missions, reflected in the curriculum and student recruitment process. The development of the school was inspired by medical education situations in developing countries. https://lnkd.in/eZ2j6a68

Bias in assessment of medical learners presents a critical, ongoing challenge to the quality of #MedicalEducation. Experiences of bias may manifest in access to learning opportunities as well as in quantitative ratings and qualitative comments describing performance. This bias interferes with learners’ developmental progress through training and has consequences for their future careers and the patients they may serve. Solutions to address bias are needed for individual faculty and leaders designing and implementing education systems. At the upcoming 2025 STFM Conference on Medical Student Education, Karen Hauer, MD, PhD (University of California, San Francisco), will discuss recommendations to avoid bias in assessment. The speaker will share resources for implementing recommendations and using them in faculty development. 🎉 Meet Lewis Williams, one of our incredible #ElevatingTheSafetyNet medical school scholars! 🩺 Lewis is one of eight students awarded a full-ride medical school scholarship, allowing him to chase his dream of becoming a doctor without the burden of debt. It was Lewis’s love for science, learning about the disparities affecting African American communities, and recognizing the healthcare gaps in our system that inspired him to pursue medicine. He is determined to represent and uplift those from underserved communities. This year, four of our L.A. Care Elevating the Safety Net Scholars, including Lewis, will attend Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, which recently opened its own independent medical school—thanks in part to a $5 million grant from L.A. Care. 🎓 This initiative is not only working to increase the number of physicians in the healthcare safety net, but it is also striving to increase diversity among the physician workforce in L.A. County. Research shows racial and ethnic diversity in the physician workforce improves outcomes in communities of color. We are proud to support Lewis on his journey to make a difference! 💛 Want to learn more about the eight scholars?
