Transcultural Caravan ’s Post

We are excited and delighted to announce our speakers for the World Council Annual Global Symposium & Transcultural Leadership Summit 2024! How can art promote transcultural dialogue? Join us on the 22nd of November and we will discuss this question with Tião Santos. Tião Santos, a Brazilian waste picker and activist, gained international recognition through his work featured in the documentary Waste Land. Directed by Lucy Walker, Waste Land follows Tião and other catadores (waste pickers) who work in Jardim Gramacho, one of the world’s largest landfills, located outside Rio de Janeiro. The film highlights Tião's journey as he collaborates with artist Vik Muniz to create large-scale portraits made from recycled materials collected from the landfill. This project not only sheds light on the lives and resilience of Brazil's waste-picking community but also brings attention to environmental and social justice issues, challenging viewers to reconsider waste, value, and dignity. Tião Santos has since become a prominent voice for sustainable practices and the rights of informal workers, embodying resilience and hope.
