Exciting News: Ethiopian Freight Forwarders and Shipping Agents Association (EFFSAA) has officially submitted a bid to host the prestigious 2027 International Federation of Freight Agencies (FIATA) World Congress! This global event brings together over 1,000 logistics leaders and industry stakeholders from around the world. EFFSAA's bid comes after previous attempts for the 2022 and 2025 congresses were impacted by security concerns in the northern region. However, with a strong proposal presented by Dawit Woubishet, EFFSAA President, at the recent FIATA meeting in Geneva, Ethiopia is now competing against the Czech Republic for the hosting rights. By withdrawing bids from Israel and Brazil, Ethiopia has positioned itself as a top contender for the 2027 congress. Dawit emphasized the importance of securing sponsors and ensuring sustained security to secure the bid, along with highlighting government support and Addis Ababa's tourist attractions. With FIATA having only held three congresses in Africa in its 100-year history, Ethiopia's bid is particularly significant, especially in light of the African Continental Free Trade Area. The host announcement is set to take place in September 2024 at the Panama City World Congress. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development! #FIATAWorldCongress #EFFSAA #LogisticsLeaders #IndustryStakeholders #EthiopiaHostingBid #AfricanTradeArea #GlobalEvent Source: Capital Ethiopia

Had a lot of fun talking about the work Giga does to #ConnectEverySchool at United Nations Economic Commission for Africa event. It was great to connect with esteemed colleagues Emma Theofelus, Ben Roberts, Dobrina Gogova-Poirier, Frank van Cappelle, Ibrahima Guimba-Saidou and engage on the topic of school connectivity. A few takeaways: - 'The future is young, the future is female, the future is African.' - 'By 2030, 42% of global youth will be in Africa.' - '#Technology aids education, it does not replace it.' - 'Bringing #connectivity to every school requires investments in the first mile, as well as students and teachers asking for access'. - 'Investing in connectivity goes beyond just learning – it also benefits entire communities and countries.' We live in exciting times where technology can help us solve problems at scale. There are so many opportunities ahead of us. 🚀
Giga in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), will host a side event on "Giga: Connecting Schools, Connecting Communities." The event is a virtual side event preceding the 10th Session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (#ARFSD), which will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Following my recent moderation of the webinar on "Ports as Essential Instruments for Sustaining and Improving Diverse Growth in African Economies," key themes and takeaways from the discussion include; port inefficiencies, hinterland connectivity, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)'s role within Africa's maritime framework. Port Inefficiencies: We discussed the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and modern technology to enhance operational efficiency and meet growing trade demands. Hinterland Connectivity: Highlighting its importance for facilitating smooth goods transition, we stressed the need for better rail development and seamless customs processes by creating standardized processes and procedures across the region through the use of the AfCFTA. Investment for Value Creation: We critiqued foreign investments, advocating for those that bolster local economies and spur adjacent industry growth, hence creating jobs. Collaboration is Key: Emphasizing collaboration over competition, sharing innovations, and successes to harness technology for improved port efficiency. Education and Awareness: Addressed maritime education's critical role and the need for increased public awareness to prepare a workforce that meets global standards. Leadership and Sustainability: Touched on the need for stable leadership which allows for continuity and the opportunity of green initiatives within and around our ports, positioning Africa to create and maintain sustainable maritime practices despite environmental challenges. Maritime Security: Highlighted the need for collective security efforts, especially given recent issues in the Red Sea, stressing the importance of shared intelligence and support. The webinar's insights present a comprehensive strategy for overcoming challenges and leveraging ports as catalysts for economic growth. I'm thankful for this rich dialogue and look forward to contributing to Africa's maritime sector's prosperous and sustainable future. #MaritimeEconomy #AfCFTA #SustainablePorts #MaritimeEducation #AfricanTrade
