As Breast Cancer Awareness Month is upon us, a cause that holds a very special place in my heart🤍, I’ve decided to take on the October Run for Research challenge. Throughout the month, I’ll be running 31 miles—one for each of the 31 people who tragically lose their lives to breast cancer every day… I know a lot of people out there are doing bigger and better challenges but for those who know me, you’ll understand that running itself is a challenge for me🫣. In fact, I’m a pretty terrible runner! If you’ve ever joined me for a run, or plan to in the future, you’ll probably think twice before doing it again! However, I’m determined to push through for this important cause, especially since it’s my very first fundraising effort. Prevent Breast Cancer is the UK’s only charity dedicated to predicting and preventing breast cancer. With early diagnosis, screening, and lifestyle changes, lives can be saved. By supporting their research, we help fund more mammograms, train future breast cancer specialists, and continue groundbreaking efforts to stop breast cancer in its tracks. The Berlin Marathon is in 6 months! I am running with my husband and brother, in remembrance of my late mother-in-law. We have raised about 60% of our required fundraising goals. Did you know.....   Colorectal cancer is NOW the leading cause of death among men and the second in women under 50 years old.  Only 20% of people ages 45-49 are getting screened for colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the third-leading cause of death in both Black men and women.  Regular colorectal cancer screening can find and remove lesions before they become cancer, and everyone aged 45 and older is encouraged to talk to a doctor about colorectal cancer screening. And when more people get screened, that means fewer new cases and deaths. As an official partner of the Mother’s Day Classic 2025, it was an absolute honour for Fressko to attend the Mother's Day Classic Foundation Partner Forum this morning. Hosted in collaboration with the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the event offered an inspiring and sobering insight into the tangible impact of funding on life-saving cancer research and the vital role the Mother’s Day Classic plays in supporting this mission. We heard first-hand from researchers about the breakthroughs made possible through consistent support, including treatments that are now saving lives but didn’t exist just a few years ago. Yet, the need remains urgent. Ovarian cancer, with no early detection test, continues to have a survival rate of just 49% - a figure unchanged in 40 years. Meanwhile, the number of breast and ovarian cancer cases is rising, underscoring why this work cannot wait. At Fressko, we’re proud to align our values of sustainability, community, and care with the Mother’s Day Classic. As part of our commitment, we will be donating proceeds from our sales at the MDC to help fund this critical research. This initiative is a testament to our belief that progress is only possible through collaboration, and we are deeply invested in being part of the solution. 🚴♂️ The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is more than just a bike ride; it's a movement that has transformed cancer research and treatment. Since its inception in 1980, the PMC has raised an astounding $972 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. They undoubtedly cross the $1 billion mark this year. Today, the PMC stands as the single largest contributor to Dana-Farber and the The Jimmy Fund, responsible for 62% of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. In 2023 alone, dedicated riders, donors, sponsors, and volunteers united to raise a record-breaking $72 million for Dana-Farber. This incredible effort underscores our collective hope and aspiration to provide doctors and researchers with the resources they need to discover cures for cancer. Remarkably, 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to Dana-Farber. Corporate sponsors make the amazing associated events happen, including the main ride the first weekend of every August. The impact of our contributions is evident. Starting this week, the Norwegian Cancer Society will run its annual campaign, Innsamlingsaksjonen (formerly Krafttak mot kreft — Mobilizing against Cancer) — a funding drive for cancer research. My colleagues and I at Aker Horizons are proud to support this campaign, together with all the companies in the Aker family 🤝 We kick-started the campaign early this morning with the distribution of ☕ & 🍩 at our HQ. Staff and visitors were encouraged to donate any amount they wished - and so many did, and shared their own stories while there! 💛 Cancer is a disease that affects so many families, including our own here at Akerkvartalet. We understand the impact cancer can have on loved ones and are committed to making a solid effort in the fight against it. The funds raised from year’s campaign will go towards research focused on genetic testing that can be offered to cancer patients at an early stage, to help them get the most effective treatment available. 📢 This Thursday morning the Axiom Team will gather for a Pink Ribbon Breakfast. Our goal is to provide awareness amongst our team and raise $1000 to donate towards the fight against Breast Cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisation funding breast cancer research towards a vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.   Breast Cancer stats in Australia: ◾ Breast Cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia and the most common among females. ◾ Everyday 58 people in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer, equating to over 21,000 people in Australia being diagnosed each year. ◾ 1 in 7 women and 1 in 550 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. ◾ Around 1,000 women aged under 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, equivalent to about 3 young women each day. ◾ Every year over 3,300 people in Australian (including 33 men) will die from breast cancer. Tomorrow's the big day. Tomorrow I, along with our sons Josh and Scott, daughter (in law) Allison, and other members of The Bergen Spinners, will ride stationary bikes in New York City to raise funds for Cycle For Survival - which is run by the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) and conducts research to fight "rare cancers" (which, in fact, comprise about half the cancers there are).
