Could carbon nanotubes (CNTs) accelerate the clean energy transition towards a sustainable, electrified future? In a recent report, experts from the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) highlighted how electrification and decarbonisation are transforming energy use. Most of today’s fossil fuel energy is wasted before reaching end users – a staggering two-thirds lost in conversion, distribution, and consumption. Electrified systems, however, can supply the same energy services with a fraction of the primary energy required. Here’s where CNTs shine. With their high durability and conductivity, CNTs can enhance the energy density of EV batteries, potentially reducing weight and extending lifespan. They’re also ideal for improving grid efficiency by minimising losses in transmission and storage. At TrimTabs, we’re excited to see CNT technology’s role in enabling this sustainable shift. A new piece in POWER magazine outlines the important role that #carboncapture and storage (#CCS) technologies can play in the #power industry, particularly in terms of mitigating #carbonemissions in this sector. When used in the #power generation sector, #CCS has the ability to capture more than 90% of #carbonemissions. In doing so, #CCS provides a way for power utilities to continue to supply reliable, clean power. Recent projections show that the global increase in potential #carbon capture capacity to around 435 million tonnes (Mt) per year by 2030, with storage capacity reaching approximately 615 Mt of #carbondioxide annually. #CCS offers a practical solution for the #power utilities industry that enables the sector to reduce #emissions while continuing to meet #energy demand, by integrating #emissionreductions into existing infrastructure without the need for costly overhauls. Climate Series: Part 2 🔋 The Energy Transition: Electrification as the Cornerstone 🌍 As the world races toward a net-zero carbon economy, massive clean electrification is crucial. By 2050, electricity's share of final energy demand could rise from 20% today to over 60%, driven by both direct electrification (EVs, heat pumps) and indirect electrification (hydrogen production). Key Insights: Explosive Growth in Electricity Demand: Global electricity use must increase 3.5 to 5 times, from 27,000 TWh today to as much as 130,000 TWh by 2050. Sectoral Transformations: Transport: BEVs will dominate road transport, driving electricity demand to 12,000-18,000 TWh by 2050. Buildings: Electrification of heating could reach 20,000-22,000 TWh by 2050. Industry: Heavy industry decarbonization could require 8,000-16,000 TWh of electricity. Renewables Lead the Charge: By 2050, wind and solar must provide 75% or more of global electricity. Energy productivity improvements are essential, but even with maximum efficiency, global electricity use is expected to triple. Infrastructure and Investment: Annual installations of zero-carbon power capacity must rise 10 times. Global investments of over $2 trillion per annum in clean power generation and supporting networks are needed. Policy and Innovation: Strategic policies and innovations in storage, grid flexibility, and hydrogen are crucial to ensure renewable energy meets demand. Global and Regional Dynamics: Developed economies: Target net-zero by 2050, with near-total electricity decarbonization by the mid-2030s. Developing economies: Aim for net-zero by 2060, with electricity use growing 5-6 times by 2050, largely from zero-carbon sources. The Bottom Line: Achieving this transition requires unprecedented coordination, investment, and innovation, but it is necessary to secure a sustainable future. #EnergyTransition #Electrification #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #NetZero #ClimateAction #Infrastructure #Innovation
