When carrying out the stability analysis of a slope using the well-known software Geostru Slope Stability - Slope, the user has the option of placing an engineering work of his choice between: Walls, Piling, Tie rods and Reinforced earth. Selecting the latter will open the module Reinforced and Reinforced Earth - MRE. Attention #geotechnicalengineers designing #soilnail #walls, don't use Bishop's method for soil nailing walls. I recently had a debate here on LinkedIn and challenged a bet of $10000 as proof that the produced circular #slopestability surface was not critical for a #soilnailwall. Well my bet was not taken, but the #engineer took up my offer to see what I had to say. An automatic search analysis with the #general-limit-equilibrium based on an evolution algorithm in our #SnailPlus software showed that the safety factors were closer to unity vs. a circular search giving more than 1.35 in from what I call a software program developed by people with no idea of how soil nail walls should be. There were more findings, but the bottom line is: You need the right tools and experience if you want better design results and minimize #geotechnical #risks. Don't go cheap on your arsenal! Kloiber. This third edition incorporates and updates the content of the previous editions while also providing significant expansions in coverage related to base connection design. Significant expansions to this Design Guide include the addition of Chapter 3 addressing the relationship between the structure and base connections; the addition of Chapter 5 pertaining to embedded base connection design; the addition of Chapter 6, which focuses on seismic design of base connections; and the addition of Appendices C and D, which provide guidance regarding the simulation and representation of base connections. A4) Qs friction calculates the drained soil parameter and Qs adhesion calculates the undrained soil parameter. In the pile analysis, these two Qs need be calculated alternatively depending on the soil type of each layer. Q sum is added up of Qs friction and Qs adhesion Q5)Neutral plan calculation spreadsheet is not found in the spreadsheet that you shared, can we I have one? And you shared two means to determine the neutral plan, one is from the formula of Bra ja das, another one is by looking at the actual displacement from the result of Settlement analysis under embankment, which of the two is more accurate? Why in the spreadsheet analysis the neutral plan was assumed equal to the length (L) of the pile for End bearing pile when neutral plan can be determined from any other means. A5)Das's formula in lecture slide presents distributional load solution below sloped embankment. Actual settlements at center/side slope/outside of embankment can be calculated with provided spreadsheets. If you have Bowles's foundation book, you can find a neutral plan location formula although it always produces around 2/3 point of pile depth. It is your task to figure out why I set neutral plan at end of pile tip. Q6) Pile 1 in Ex.6 would experience sum of downdrag before and after road embankment extension in this case? What to do if the factored structural capacity is less than the factored downdrag?There is a need to use pile having bigger structural capacity in the case Downdrag is bigger than the structural capacity right?
