Shedding light on a pivotal issue: Child Protection Laws in Gilgit-Baltistan! Ensuring the safety and well-being of our children is a shared responsibility that requires concerted efforts from policy makers, law enforcement agencies, judiciary, and civil society organizations. Understanding the international policies and national plans against child protection is crucial for safeguarding our youngest citizens. Internationally, conventions like the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) set out comprehensive frameworks for child protection, emphasizing the right to safety, education, and protection from exploitation and abuse. In Gilgit-Baltistan, policy makers of the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly, along with the police department, judiciary, and civil society organizations, have a pivotal role to play. They must collaborate to not only enact robust child protection laws but also ensure their effective implementation, following the international policies and national plans. Key stakeholders, including the police department and judiciary, are responsible for enforcing child protection laws, investigating cases of child abuse, trafficking, and exploitation, and ensuring justice for victims. Additionally, civil society organizations play a crucial role in raising awareness, providing support services, and advocating for policy change. Establishing Child Protection Units in all districts of Gilgit-Baltistan is essential. These units would serve as focal points for child protection efforts, providing support services, coordinating interventions, and ensuring prompt response to cases of child abuse and exploitation. Reliable data on child protection issues in Gilgit-Baltistan remains limited, underscoring the urgent need for improved data collection mechanisms and research initiatives to inform evidence-based policies and interventions. Let's unite in our commitment to protect the rights of every child in Gilgit-Baltistan and create a safer and brighter future for generations to come. Today, I stepped forward with members of the Crossbench and Opposition to signal our intention to move censure motions against the Minister for Child Protection, Katrine Hildyard MP. This isn’t something to be taken lightly — censure motions are rare but justified in times where total confidence has been lost in a Minister’s ability to handle the requirements of their portfolio. The Minister has had 826 days to demonstrate her suitability to the role, and ability to multi-task. Despite promising to introduce legislation ensuring our state’s heroic carers and foster carers have the right to procedural fairness back in 2022, it’s been radio silence since then. A report written on this very legislation has been sitting on her desk since February 2023 and still, no action. How many more children need to be impacted by a crisis-ridden Department for Child Protection before the Minister decides to take one of the most important portfolios in all of government seriously? The Child Protection portfolio deserves undivided attention. Vulnerable children deserve undivided attention. The Minister has shown it’s impossible to give 100% to three different portfolios. We need an undistracted Child Protection Minister, which is why Katrine Hildyard needs to stand up or step aside.
