🌍 Excited to be attending the 35th Sherpa meeting in beautiful Paris, France at the UNESCO HQ! 🇫🇷 The High Level Ocean Panel is an unprecedented initiative composed of world leaders committed to developing, catalyzing, and supporting solutions for ocean health and wealth in policy, governance, technology, and finance. The panel's mission is to ensure that the ocean remains a sustainable resource for future generations through a balanced approach that benefits both the economy and the environment. As a proud member of the High Level Ocean Panel, Seychelles marks its position as the 18th leader to join this prestigious initiative, representing one of the African Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This milestone underscores Seychelles' commitment to sustainable ocean governance and the promotion of blue economy principles on a global scale. We are focusing on several key points: - Post-2025 structure: Exploring the future framework for sustainable ocean management. - Emergence of new sectors: Highlighting innovative opportunities in seaweed farming and genetic engineering. It’s day 3 here and the hot topic is on Deep Sea bed mining. Although these past few days Seychelles has intervened on several priority areas such as ocean knowledge and the impact of community-driven projects post-2025. Our discussions here are not just about policies but about real, tangible benefits for our communities and the global ecosystem. Together, we are crafting a vision for a sustainable and prosperous ocean future. I currently have the pleasure of working with Tā Mark Solomon and Te Korowai o Te Tai ō Marokura in working towards obtaining World Heritage Status for Kaikōura.  World Heritage in the past has been a Eurocentric, top-down process that has not taken into account local communities and indigenous world views and perspective. This however change in 2007, when the World Heritage Committee adopted a “Strategic Objective” to “Enhance the role of communities in the implementation of the World Heritage Convention”, in recognition of “the critical importance of involving indigenous, traditional and local communities in the implementation of the World Heritage Convention”. This was implemented under the New Zealand Chairmanship of Sir Tumu Te Heuheu, Paramount Chief of Ngāti Tūwharetoa. For community such as Kaikōura, World Heritage is more than just a status symbol for places of Outstanding Universal Value. It provides an opportunity for us to place our environment central to our economy, outside of the swinging pendulum of environmental policy. Kaikōura environment underpins all our industries of fishing, farming, viticultural, apiaries, sports and recreation, food production and of course tourism. It provides guidance for industries such as construction and outlines our values to future investors and development. Where the biggest development can come from is through aligning research and education to provide a full view of what is happening within our ecosystem and to create Kaikōura as a Marine Research Centre of Excellence. This ties in with the longer-term goal of creating a Research Institute within Kaikōura. It also brings cohesion across various community groups and aligns toward one vision, whilst benefiting from the economies of scale. We are hosting a Community Hui on 10 December 2024 at 5:30pm at Donegal House to have an open community korero around what World Heritage means and is it right for our community. Our aim is to garner over 60,000 Ambassadors aka Supporters in our journey to become World Heritage listed, both as individuals and corporate/organisational ambassadors. 

This marks a true revolution in how cutting-edge AI technology can support the preservation of parks and natural areas while simultaneously predicting disasters to protect the global ecosystem.

🙋♀️ Engaging the young generation in environmental issues is crucial for building  a sustainable future. Young people  bring fresh perspectives, passion, and innovative solutions regarding critical challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution. By equipping  them with the right tools and knowledge, we empower  them to turn their ideas into action, strengthen environmental movements and cultivate eco-conscious values for future generations. 🙋♂️Therefore, we, the Interreg Euro MED Natural Heritage Mission, are organizing info days in high schools, youth organizations and Universities to promote youth engagement and amplify their role as “managers” of the planet. These events aim to create  the circumstances for young people to understand the importance of finding and implementing long-term resilient solutions that balance human needs with ecological integrity. Their involvement is vital in ensuring that policies and actions reflect both present and future generations' needs. In the lead-up to the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 3), the philanthropy is proudly supporting a pivotal workshop taking place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Titled "An Ocean of Possibilities: Envisioning the Future of Ocean Sustainability," this event will bring together stakeholders from across the globe to collaboratively design a desirable future for the ocean and map out the pathways to achieve it. As the global 30x30 initiative - calling for 30% of the planet's land and ocean to be protected by 2030 - approaches its target date, this workshop will explore the next steps beyond 2030. It's an opportunity to consider the actions needed to ensure the long-term health and resilience of our ocean. The workshop will use an innovative visioning methodology aimed at sparking creativity, fostering bold solutions to today's challenges, and inspiring ocean action at every level. Its goal is to empower ocean advocates and accelerate efforts toward sustainable marine ecosystems. The outcomes of this collective effort will be presented at UNOC in June 2025 in Nice, helping to shape future priorities for ocean sustainability. 🌍 Are you part of the ocean community?
