If you work in tech, chances are you know someone who’s recently been affected by a reduction in force, layoff, downsizing, or “rightsizing” — in other words, a job loss. It’s uncomfortable news to hear, but it hits even harder when it affects a coworker you’re close to. I’ve chatted with colleagues who’ve stayed on after layoffs, and the question comes up every time: What can we do to help? It’s a tough question, with no perfect answer. We’ve talked about trying to connect your coworker with someone in your network who has a job opening. Some colleagues offer to make relevant connections on LinkedIn. A suggestion from my friend Joni Williamson that I really love is writing a heartfelt, detailed LinkedIn recommendation for the person. It’s a small but meaningful gesture. I’ve also tried to just be a listening ear. The experience of a layoff can feel a lot like watching a friend go through the stages of grief. You can’t really say anything to take the hurt away. It can feel similar to the well-meaning, but often hollow “thoughts and prayers” that get shared after tragedies — comforting but not really changing the reality of the situation. I’ve heard affected coworkers question: "If I were doing my job well, wouldn’t they have fought to keep me?” I try to emphasize that these types of layoffs are usually not tied to performance. It’s important to view it as a business decision, rather than feeling personally responsible. I don’t think this reassurance helps right away, but it will be important in establishing confidence as decisions are being made about next steps. 5 people I know were blindsided layoffs in the last two weeks. But they shouldn't have been blindsided. Why? Because everyone is at risk. NO matter who you are. There is little security in any job, even working for yourself. The truth is, it's human nature to think "Oh it won't be me." even when you see people around you being laid off. I worked at a company that laid off people like clockwork 3+ times a year. Yet I never updated my resume I never updated my LinkedIn profile I never networked, reached out, stayed relevant, took courses, made new contacts I just watched the chaos around me like I was an outsider looking in. Until it was my turn, and I was laid off after 15 years. I was lost, especially at the beginning of Covid. I should have been prepared, and been networking all that time, even if I wasn't actively looking for a new job. The same when I was laid off last year. The company wasn't doing well. People came and went. They tried everything. I was given a big promotion a year earlier, but I knew my time was coming. I will never be blind-sided by a layoff again. I will be mad, angry, sad, scared when it happens again (I say when, not If) but not caught off guard. There are a million excuses about why you haven't updated your profile or resume, or why you're not networking. But the excuses should stop now. For me and for you. I don't want you to be that person who has no idea what to do now. Work hard. Be loyal to your company. Give them your very best every day. I do. But be loyal to YOU too. If you’ve been let go recently and don’t know how to answer the question “ Why did you leave your last job?” keep reading. 👎 Wrong Answer: “ I was part of a round of layoffs.” I hear this all the time and while not a bad answer perse, it doesn’t allow you to communicate how you brought value during your time there. 💡 Remember: an interview is your opportunity to build your brand as someone who can deliver results, layoffs or not. 👍 Right Answer: “I loved my time at my last company, where I was able to do many great things, like [accomplishment 1, accomplishment 2 & accomplishment 3]. Unfortunately, I was [part of a mass layoff / impacted by a restructure / no longer able to grow / not challenged enough ], which brings me to this role. I believe that my direct experience and skills can help solve the challenges you’re experiencing, as well deliver results like the ones I just listed. Navigating the Aftermath of Layoffs: Rebuilding Connections I’ve watched company after company announce layoffs. I have read the posts from the employees impacted. It can be devastating news if you liked your job, manager, coworkers, or employer. It can be happy news if you were ready to leave anyway. And to those who don’t get laid off, it can be terrible news because you now must do the work of those who are leaving. Unless, of course, you have a manager and company leaders who understand you can’t do the same amount of work with less people. What I missed the most after being laid off were the connections. The social interaction with my peers. I missed our laughter and sharing during staff meetings. I missed the conversations at each other’s cubicle or office where we developed solutions to complex problems. I missed the snacks we brought in for each other during the busy times of the year. The caring and concern for each other, our kids, pets, and parents is what I remember most. Suddenly that was all gone. If you are feeling the same, take the time to reach out to others who were laid off. And don’t forget to stay in touch with the people who remain employed at your former employer. These connections are important to your well-being and to your job search. Some call this networking. I call this being a good friend. You will have many employers during your lifetime. But the friends you make at the workplace are valuable connections that can become your community of support. Layoffs are painful for everyone involved. Cry. Be angry. Be frustrated and overwhelmed. Feel all your feelings. They are big and small and uncomfortable pushes toward the new life you will build. Prioritize what makes you feel good. What makes you smile? Sunshine on your walk in the morning. Sipping coffee or tea as you listen to the birds outside. A phone call to a friend that you haven’t talked to in years. A text sent with a meme that has you laughing. Layoffs can be viewed as a blessing or a curse. You get to decide. Your new job will come. It may pay you more or less than you were making before. Know that you will survive the upheaval of the layoff. Each moment is an opportunity to begin again.
