New Chief Sustainability Officer to Know: Sabert Corporation, a manufacturer of food packaging solutions, has hired Richa Desai as chief #sustainability and strategy officer. Here are four things to know: 1. Business Scope and Scale: Sabert, founded in 1983, is based in Sayreville, New Jersey. Sabert's packaging focus involves five areas of expertise: Performance, Presentation, Safety, Sustainability and Economics. 2. Sustainability Strategy: Sabert's sustainability strategy -- known as Earthtelligent -- "drives improved environmental outcomes through innovative business thinking," the company asserts. 3. Role and Experience: This is Desai's second tour of duty at Sabert. From 2019 to 2021, she was "instrumental in establishing and building Earthtelligent, the company's initial sustainability framework," Sabert said. During her tenure, she "spearheaded key initiatives, including the production of Sabert's first annual Sustainability Report and the launch of the Zero Waste to Landfill program," the company added. 4. Are maggots the unsung heroes of sustainable innovation? 🐛🌿 Exciting developments are brewing at the University of Technology Sydney in partnership with GOTERRA – a trailblazer in food waste management. Goterra's innovative approach utilises black soldier fly larvae, turning them from wriggly critters into eco-warriors. These larvae munch through food waste, transforming it into valuable, eco-friendly protein and fertiliser in just 12 days. Since 2023, the UTS Integrated Product Design Research Group (IPD-R) have been working closely with Goterra to further refine this bioconversion process by developing an innovative manufacturing solution that aligns with Goterra’s circular economy objectives. This project exemplifies the rigorous research-focused approach that IPD-r adopts in its collaborations. Their aim isn’t just to create innovative products but to sculpt resilient futures that resonate with the socio-ecological fabric of our society. This project highlights the central role of product design in advancing sustainable practices and solutions.
