The journey has been filled with learning and innovation, and today, I’d like to share some key insights that have emerged from this experience. Here are vital lessons learned from 30 years in executive recruitment for customer success: 1) The Evolution of Customer Success Roles: What started as basic support functions has evolved into strategic roles central to business growth. Understanding this shift has been crucial for identifying leaders who can drive change. 2) The Importance of Soft Skills: Technical skills are essential, but the real differentiators are soft skills—empathy, communication, and adaptability—which are critical for fostering long-term customer relationships. 3) Diversity Drives Innovation: Recruiting from a diverse talent pool has not only enriched the teams but also brought in varied perspectives that drive creative solutions and business success. 4) The Impact of Technology: Advances in technology have transformed how customer success teams operate. Embracing tech-savvy leaders has been key to staying ahead in this dynamic field. 5) Strategic Onboarding and Retention: The real work begins post-hire. Developing effective onboarding and retention strategies has proven essential for long-term leadership success and team stability. 6) Adapting to Market Changes: The ability to quickly adapt recruitment strategies in response to market changes has been indispensable for meeting the evolving needs of businesses and their customers. Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending the Hiring Excellence Meetup organized by Productboard & Ashby It was cool to meet so many HR experts in one place! 👥 One of the topics discussed really stuck in my brain: What happens when a CXO suddenly requests the hiring of e.g. 40 engineers? This scenario perfectly illustrates the challenge of reactive versus strategic recruitment. 🧠 In my opinion, such significant hiring initiatives should ideally not occur in isolation but as a result of strategic discussions involving multiple departments—Sales, Product, Finance—and guided by top leadership like the CRO, CEO or Chief of Product. 🧩What I want to say is that recruitment strategy is just a piece of the puzzle and in healthy organisations leaders should not just “throw” hiring requests at HR and expect them to “dance”. Simultaneously, HR - or more precisely, Talent Acquisition - shouldn't just passively wait for directives, but should actively participate in the company’s growth strategy and anticipate future hiring needs. Oh, and if a sudden request disrupts your typical hiring focus, like needing a sales expert in a predominantly tech-oriented team (or vice versa), that's exactly when the value of specialised external partners comes in. 🔍 Because whether you need an IT recruitment agency or a Sales Recruitment agency, these experts can significantly reduce your time to hire, boost efficiency, help you to maintain focus and ensure you don’t miss out on the ideal candidate. 🚀 Anyway, all in all I really enjoyed the meetup and loved meeting Willem Wijnans, 𝓩𝓭𝓮𝓷𝓴𝓪 Gillarová, Zbynek Novotny, Viktoria Galik, Martin Bolek, and many others.
