🚨 VET Sector Alert 🚨 A recent turn of events has shed light on a concerning situation within the education sector. An agent, with a history of advocating for universities over VET, is now facing backlash for his actions. Despite his efforts to promote universities as the superior choice for students, the repercussions have been detrimental to both the VET sector and universities themselves. In a surprising twist, this agent is now opposing the very government policies he once supported, all while emphasizing the importance of universities - a move driven by the substantial commissions he earns from student placements. His push for universities to dominate raises questions about his motives and whether his actions truly serve the best interests of students and the industry at large. It is crucial for us to come together as a community and ensure that the education sector remains fair and functional. By advocating for a balanced and equitable system, we can strive to deliver better outcomes for students while upholding industry integrity. Let's stand united in our pursuit of a fair and inclusive education system! #Education #VET #Universities #FairEducation #StudentOutcomes #IndustryIntegrity

The NID project has received hundreds of millions, if not billions, of Kina since its inception, yet it appears to be a way for politicians to siphon public funds. Even after all these years, less than 10% of the population has an NID, with rural areas likely seeing less than 2% coverage. How many years has it been since this project started? The card printing machine is only in Port Moresby, and people sometimes wait a year to receive their cards. There are constant issues, like running out of ink or blank cards. It's time to put an end to this inefficiency. The government should invest in 20-100 card printing machines, distribute 5-10 machines to each provincial office, and deploy teams to rural areas, similar to how common roll updates are handled. Technology should be utilized more effectively—data can be updated from anywhere with network access. Given the substantial funds already allocated, we should have achieved at least 90% coverage of the population by now. Let try improve system or process where it does not work well.

This piece from The Chronicle was so good and gave me two books to read for the paper I'm working on! The narrative that gets reinforced all over the place that college is primarily about employability and that the primary outcome should be credentialing (having a degree so as to be employable) can lead to a bleak reality: those students want to do only what they must to get the paper that will fulfill the economic promise higher education has made to them. Critical thinking, identity formation, and self-authorship need not apply. In academic advising specifically, I think about what we are doing (or are not doing) to promote exploration, meaning-making, and the capacity to be affected (perhaps even transformed) by higher education. How can those come through in an environment many now face of "retention at all costs"? If you'd like to hear me muse about this some more and are attending NACADA Annual next month, join me at my paper session!

Wondering how to choose a major? If you're going to be a junior, here's some tips for you: Much like your sophomore year, junior year is about building more and more experiences in the fields you are interested in. Continue taking courses in those fields both at and outside of school and also commit yourself to your clubs and extracurriculars. One other notable way to build experiences in the fields you are interested in is through research. Now, no one expects you to start finding a cure for cancer through your research as a high school junior, but it’s really important for you to at least test the waters of research. Colleges love to see students who have at least tried a research project because much of college academics involve undergraduate research. Here’s a brief overview of how to get into research in high school. To get a research position as a high schooler, reach out to lots of college professors and PhD students and be up-front about what you know and don’t know. In your emails to them, don’t act like you can contribute a lot to their projects, but instead, tell them that you are a high schooler interested in this field and research and want to get some hands-on experience before college. To wrap it up, junior year should be your time to continue diving into the fields you’re interested in.
