The field of landscape architecture needs to address the moral and ethical implications of the projects we take on. Historically our field has been complicit in the displacement of communities of color through highway construction, urban renewal projects, and redlining. And these mistakes carry forward to the current day. From years long construction projects causing the failure of large and small businesses along 16th Street, large suburbian gentrification projects in Aurora, and creating a Larimer Square that is unaffordable to nearly everyone but the wealthy, we must ask ourselves what role we play in the destruction of our city.

Built in three phases between 2600 and 1600 BC, Stonehenge stands like a mystery on the green grass of Britain. In its third phase, the imposing stone blocks that give it its unique appearance were erected. The builders of Stonehenge employed an ingenious system of box and dowel assemblage to give the structure stability. The lintels were joined by tonguing and mortising, a technique perfected over the course of the construction of earlier wooden monuments. The extraordinary human dedication and effort invested in its construction suggests a special purpose. Stonehenge is believed to have been a prehistoric ritual center aligned with the movement of the sun, a place of profound significance to the communities of the time. 35- and 39-Storey Towers Proposed Near Glencairn Station A new application from Osmington Gerofsky Development Corp would introduce 35- and 39-storey towers to a block currently developed with low-rise buildings. Designed by Wallman Architects, the dual towers in #Toronto's Glen Park neighbourhood respond to the designation of the area surrounding the subway station as a Major Transit Station Area within which the Province is enabling and encouraging higher densities. This proposal features a total Gross Floor Area (GFA) of 58,739m², for a Floor Space Index (FSI) of 10.41 on the site. The towers would rise from a six-storey podium that transitions to an eight-storey volume between the towers. CT Planning have successfully secured planning permission for the demolition of an existing dwellinghouse and erection of a replacement dwelling in the Shropshire Green Belt and Kemberton Conservation Area. The demolition was previously deemed unacceptable by the Local Planning Authority due to concerns over the status of the original dwelling as a non-designated heritage asset and its setting within the Conservation Area as well as questions around the sustainability of demolishing the existing dwelling. However, with the assistance of Sian M. at Avalon Heritage Consultants, it was successfully demonstrated that the heritage value of the original dwelling was not of a sufficient level to justify its retention. Furthermore, the design of the replacement dwelling was more consistent with the traditional rural architectural style of the Conservation Area. The applicant also addressed concerns over the sustainability of the development highlighting that the proposed new dwelling would operate more efficiently and therefore provide a more sustainable form of living consistent with the objectives of national policy. Concerns were also expressed as to whether the proposal would be inappropriate development in the Green Belt. One of the limited number of exceptions to the presumption against new building in the Green Belt is where it relates to the extension or alteration of a building, provided it does not result in disproportionate additions over and above the size of the original building. It was successfully demonstrated that the replacement dwelling, is of a similar footprint and scale as the existing, in so far that the proposed replacement dwelling is not materially larger than the existing building to be replaced and as such the impact on the ‘openness’ of the Green Belt is minimal.
