📍 Morenci Mine, Arizona Just wrapped up my first mine site visit, and I'm still in awe of the sheer scale of operations at Morenci. Standing at the edge of the pit, watching 400-ton haul trucks look like toys against the massive terraced walls, really puts things in perspective. No amount of satellite imagery could have prepared me for witnessing North America's largest copper producer in person. The highlight? Seeing our instrumentation in action - from paddlewheels monitoring flow rates to piezometers measuring water pressure across the site. What started as technical specs on paper came alive watching these sensors provide real-time operational insights. There's something powerful about connecting the dots between instrumentation and its practical application in one of mining's most critical operations. A big thank you to the Morenci team for hosting and sharing their insights. Autonomous BEVs advance Mining solution providers have continually been advocating for the incorporation of both electric and autonomous technologies into the next generation of equipment, arguing that the two will provide compounded benefits for any operation. This concept is starting to be tested out in the underground mining space, with Paul Moore in his IM January 2025 leader homing in on one example from Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions with the LH518iB. Having first been launched in March 2023, the loader - Sandvik's first underground battery machine equipped for full automation - has got off to a fast start with mine deployments started or scheduled to start in North America, Latin America, Europe and Australasia. The themes of electrification and decarbonisation are increasing in strategic importance in the mining industry. Asset owners and OEMs are also increasing their levels of collaboration to address these two topics. This requires more openness and interoperability in the OT and IT infrastructures of mines while stressing cybersecurity. Tools such as Mender for secure OTA updating of software on embedded gateways and sensors on mining equipment, with its open core model, security by design and advanced management server-side and device client APIs will become increasingly valuable to the mining ecosystem. #OTAupdates
