🌍 **Harmonizing Standards for Sustainable Raw Materials** 🌍 Exciting developments are underway as the OECD, EU, and ISO work together towards harmonizing standards for the production, processing, and traceability of sustainable raw materials. This collaborative effort was a major highlight at the Berlin Mining Forum, emphasizing the critical need for standardized rules in mineral raw material supply chains to foster harmonized trade and economic growth alongside renewable energy initiatives. Key Points Discussed: **Need for Harmonized ESG Criteria and Standards:** Ongoing efforts to merge existing standard schemes are essential. * **Multi-Stakeholder Participation:** It's vital to include the concerns of both large mining industry operators and local stakeholders in a structured and timely manner. **Role of Independent Third-Party Auditing:** Auditing of standards, rather than the standards themselves, is crucial for measuring and improving the sustainability efforts and transparency of global mining operators. UNFC and UNRMS are tools for global standardisation of classification methodologies and of sustainable resource management principles. #SustainableMining #RawMaterials #ISOStandards #ESG #RenewableEnergy #BerlinMiningForum #Harmonization #Sustainability #Trade #EconomicGrowth Dario Liguti

On the 18th of March 2024, the European Council adopted the European Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), as demand for battery minerals, critical minerals and rare earth elements will increase exponentially in the coming years as the EU move away from fossil fuels and turns to clean energy systems. This was the last step in the decision-making procedure for CRMA. Eurobattery Minerals CEO, Roberto García Martínez, comments the final approval: “As a company focused on develop and run several nickel, cobalt, and copper projects in Europe and thus provide the region with responsibly mined battery minerals, we are pleased with the approval of the CRMA. The act proves that the EU has realized that Europe needs to be more self-sufficient in responsibly mined battery minerals to power a cleaner continent.” The goal with CRMA is to ensure a stable, transparent, and eco-friendly supply of crucial materials for EU industries. The CRMA streamlines permit procedures for the mining industry, with extraction permits capped at 27 months. It sets ambitious targets for local extraction, processing, and recycling, aiming for greater self-sufficiency in Europe. Following the Council’s approval today of the CRMA, the legislative act has been adopted. The CRMA will enter into force on the twentieth day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. The urgency to find critical raw materials for a clean energy future is undeniable. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? On March 18, the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) was approved in the #EU, aiming to boost domestic mining and secure a steady supply of these crucial elements. The CRMA identifies 34 critical and 17 strategic raw materials essential for green technologies, digital advancements, and even defense and space industries. Ambitious goals are set: 𝟏𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐔'𝐬 𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝟒𝟎% 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐔, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬. The EU faces a complex challenge. Diversifying supply chains for these materials is crucial to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Yet, traditional mining often comes at a steep price for the environment and local communities. #Mining disrupts ecosystems, pollutes water sources, and can displace populations. Refining these materials locally further adds to the environmental burden. Is mining the only path forward? We need truly #sustainable solutions and innovation is the key. At UP Catalyst, we believe in a future where clean technologies don't rely on environmentally destructive practices. We're pioneering a groundbreaking approach – developing a secure supply of sustainable graphite from CO2 emissions. Let's embrace a green transition that's truly green! We can achieve net-zero goals without sacrificing the environment. My interview with the European Court of Auditors Journal about the EU’s industrial policy trilemma, of finding a path between the interacting demands of three policy goals – the green transition, affordability for EU citizens, and economic sovereignty, is now available to read online. “Take the mining of lithium and other critical raw materials in Europe. Getting this out of the ground, from discovery, takes between 12 to 16 years. So if you find lithium now, you are looking at 2040 before it actually becomes available . What do you do until then? Consequently, as auditor you end up at looking at the how […] We do not provide a solution to [the EU’s trilemma]. Because that is not our task. But we can highlight the choices the EU has to make, and how one goal can perhaps come at the detriment of another.” https://lnkd.in/eJnKv--s

The Green Transition NEEDS raw materials! Growing demand for sustainable products goes hand in hand with an ever-growing demand for mined minerals and metals. Europe already has a mining industry aligned with high European ESG standards, providing good European jobs, and ready to deliver on a growing demand. https://lnkd.in/eKktC_T8 Euromines #rawmaterials #metals #innovation #sustainability #mining #responsiblemining #supplychains #greentransition
⛏️ Euromines Manifesto: Raw Materials Mining in Europe: Responsible, Necessary and Ready to deliver ✅ Read Manifesto here: https://lnkd.in/ezm_9qWd 🤝Let's be proud, and let's be realistic, but let's be honest ! Raw materials supply dilemma puts #EU at a junction: 🛑 One path leads to dependency: meaning abandoning Europe’s mining industry in favour of high imports, less Environmental Social Governance (ESG) compliance, low strategic autonomy, and diminished resilience. ✅ The other path leads to embracing 20-30 new strategic mining projects in Europe by 2030. It leads to a sustainable and prosperous European mining industry which delivers on reinforced strategic autonomy, with ESG performance aligned with European values. Euromines advocates 3 ways to strengthen Europe's raw materials supply chains: 👉 Licence to Operate: Enabling and Maintaining know-how and operations in the EU; 👉 Growing and investing: ensuring competitiveness; 👉 Being responsible: Recognising operational excellence. In order to achieve the goals of the Critical Raw Materials Act #CRMA, and allow the ambition of the EU Green Deal transformation to materialize, Euromines urges the European Commission to apply six steps to Europe’s resilience: 1️⃣ Step 1: Getting things done - an Executive Vice President for Europe’s industrial transition and investments; 2️⃣ Step 2: Establishing the base - An EU ‘Industry Deal’ to provide a business case to the Green Deal; 3️⃣ Step 3: ‘Think raw materials’ – check the EU legislation on raw materials needs via efficient impact assessments; 4️⃣ Step 4: An industry-centric climate and environmental review to balance competing priorities; 5️⃣ Step 5: Competitive framework conditions and targeted state aid to bridge the gap and build the infrastructure for industrial transition; 6️⃣ Step 6: Funding and access to finance – €350bn per year up to 2030 needed for the climate transition Euromines Manifesto: https://lnkd.in/ezm_9qWd #rawmaterials #industrytransition #responsiblemining #EUstrategicautonomy #supplychains #sustainability #security #resilience #criticalrawmaterials #EU

🆕 Open-access 🆓 Our analysis of #CriticalMineral strategies in Australia. Across 17 strategies from the commonwealth and most states and the NT governments over $6.6bn has been dedicated to upgrading critical mineral development, including processing technology. Despite every strategy claiming that Australia's high ESG standards are a competitive advantage for our exports, very little effort is made to upgrade environmental or social outcomes or the rights of First Nations. To maintain and capitalise on our 'ethical' competitive advantage, real reforms are needed. Co-authored with Neil Coe School of Geosciences University of Sydney https://lnkd.in/d3sMCvFa
