Despite covering a significant portion of the ocean, slow implementation of management strategies and failure to restrict impactful activities undermine the ability of these areas to deliver positive conservation outcomes. With the deadline to protect at least 30% of the ocean by 2030 approaching, the assessment underscores the need for both increased quantity and improved quality of MPAs to achieve meaningful marine conservation goals. A brilliant new paper demonstrates what Nature Seychelles has been saying for years based on our experience managing the Cousin Island Special Reserve: carefully designed support networks of smaller protected areas can be important to reach the Global Biodiversity Framework’s target of 30% of the planet in protected and conserved areas by 2030. The paper identified seven benefits from small reserves, when correctly located and well-managed: (1) conserving critical habitat of range-limited or relic species; (2) conserving remaining areas of sensitive or threatened habitat in altered ecosystems; (3) conserving habitat for sensitive, time-limited lifecycle stages, such as raptor nesting sites and fish spawning grounds; (4) maintaining and enabling connectivity by providing stepping stones of suitable habitat through inhospitable ecosystems; (5) providing increased protection for critical habitat within Category V protected landscapes and seascapes to boost their overall conservation potential; (6) taking advantage of conservation opportunities at cultural sites, sacred natural sites, and other faith-based sites in transformed landscapes; (7) integrating different management approaches and governance types in a range of connected small reserves. There are some anniversaries that mean more than others. Twenty years ago, we decided to set up an ecological reserve in Bahia, Brazil, within the Northern Atlantic Forest, one of the richest biodiversity hotspots on the planet. We started with a dying forest.   Our program was designed to reconcile the production of industrial rubber and #biodiversity preservation. Our main challenges? To keep people from doing illegal activities in the forest and to build a conservation team.   At the same time, we have been involving the local communities who share this territory, so that they can make decisions for a more sustainable future.   After 20 years of protection and restoration, we have an ecosystem that's full of life. #WorldEnvironmentDay Watch the full story ➡ https://lnkd.in/eeWWRsuW

Canary Islands can be pioneer in Ocean Restoration. Our oceans have suffered a significant decline in biodiversity and health. However, the Canary Islands are leading the way towards marine restoration. Thanks to the European initiative “Restore Our Oceans and Waters by 2030” and the recent Nature Restoration Act, we are seeing impressive progress. With 88 collaborations in 60 projects and an investment of 17 million euros, Canary Islands are at the forefront of biodiversity conservation, pollution prevention and the restoration of key marine habitats. 🌱🐟   PLOCAN works to accelerate this transition towards ocean sustainability, innovation, knowledge sharing and promote large-scale solutions, as collaboration in #WINBLUE and Bluemissionaa projects.
